Mivec9 1st Gear November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 I received an email from a freaked dad, some mass mail kinda thing, what do you think of this Dad?: For those who might have kids who were 12 years old, it was definitely an exciting day for many yesterday, especially the Mom and Dads out there. Why was it so? It was the release of results for PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination). I was there with my son Brandon to collect his PSLE results. Guess what, he had an amazing result. He managed 178 points. For a moment, I nearly freaked out. He did not manage to get into the Express Stream as the cut off point was 188. As for me, I was kind of stunned initially as I had managed 4As and an aggregate of 241 when I took my PSLE 22 years back. As Brandon stared at the result slip, tears started dropping from the side of his eyes. He was devastated but deep inside his heart, he knew that he had not made the necessary effort. Of course I felt a little bad as well as I had been really busy with my business and had neglected him. If your kid had scored 178, I think you wouldn't be sleeping well at night. You must be probably preparing the cane and planning a whipping session. You would probably be hurling abuses at your kid or telling him or her how disappointed you were...not me. Guess what I told him? I said, "Brandon, welcome to the real world. You hadn't suffered any setback in life yet. This is the harsh reality of life. What you sow is what you reap and you should stare hard at the reactions of the other pupils. Many of them are enjoying the success of their efforts while you were distracted by the games and tv. It is better for you to suffer the setback now than later." This is not the end, I told him. I then asked him, "Are you a loser?". He said No and I told Brandon, "You are a loser now! You have a choice, you can choose to be only a loser now or you can be a loser for life. I was a loser once but I changed myself and got back onto track." In life there will be a lot of setbacks. When you encounter them, just look at the bright side. Overcome your setbacks and you will end up into higher ground. Get swallowed by it and you will be a goner. ↡ Advertisement
Chemz Clutched November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 but the truth is, most 12yr olds wouldn't be concerned other than the next 3mths ahead of them.. especially if they're living a sheltered life with nothing to worry about, ie bills, water, food, a bed. when i was 12, i didn't even project myself 10yrs down the road or what i wanna be in the future. Mivec9 1st Gear November 28, 2007 Author Share November 28, 2007 becos this dad is a marketing person with his own business...hence he talked like he was talking to his client "be positive, look at bright side, plan ahead, sow what u reap...blah blah"
Silver_blade Turbocharged November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 Agree. It's often quite pointless to keep telling kids about their future. Better to tell them about something nearer. I don't find the email inspiring or anything of that sort at all. Maybe it's just me...I find the word 'loser' a dirty word. i don't like to use such word on a 12yrs old. Nutty 4th Gear November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 (edited) At least he didn't whack his son for doing badly. and he's a young dad! Imagine he did PSLE 22 yrs ago. So he must have got married or shot-gun at 21. Edited November 28, 2007 by Nutty

Albeniz Turbocharged November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 I have a friend who went to primary 8, scored well in PSLE to get into Maris Stella (SAP school)and then into National Junior College. PSLE is not really the end. Paper qualification is not the most important. Even if one has Masters/Ph.D, his life could not be guaranteed to be much better than others. Street-wisdom, EQ, AQ are also very important in real-life.
Jho0001 Neutral Newbie November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 "You are a loser now! You have a choice, you can choose to be only a loser now or you can be a loser for life. I was a loser once but I changed myself and got back onto track." Cant believe he called his son a "loser"...a better way of communicating would be "you didnt do well but at least you can strive perform better and achieve better results next time"....lessons learned. Glad he's not my dad.

Sony 1st Gear November 28, 2007 Share November 28, 2007 ahh.. I like this line: You hadn't suffered any setback in life yet. This is the harsh reality of life. Mivec9 1st Gear November 28, 2007 Author Share November 28, 2007 no one really said much when i received my results. I made my own choice since young to make own decisions. I chose normal over express then.
