A massive security blunder in British has left almost half the country's population at the risk of identity theft and bank fraud. The risk arose after two disks containing the names, addresses, dates of birth, national insurance numbers and some cases, banking details for 25 million adults and children went missing.

Private records of 7.25 million families claiming child benefit - a tax-free monthly payment available to everyone with children - were on the disks.

It was mentioned in one of the first articles on this subject to appear, that the two disks were password-protected. This should provide some defense against casual hackers and petty thieves.

Although I think the disks will be very valuable now to whoever has it. All this hoo-hah in the news does nothing... only serves to attract the attention of more professional criminals who have greater chance of cracking the passwords.
