For those office use, my inclination would be XP since everyone is using XP and there might be some compatibility issue with internal and external. Upside is when it is time to upgrade to Vista, then these PC could easily be written off from the account(beware here, the boss will tell you due to upgrade, CO not making $ hence no bonus).

For SOHO and Home user, since I am buying a new PC - I might as well go for Vista.

Vista is slow, the repetitive security warnings are annoying and does not have any features which I use that XP doesn't have.

And did you know that it has been proven that XP SP3 beta is actually faster than Vista? Sorry to the Microsoft fans, but Vista to me is like a bad copy-version of the OS X and I cannot help but be reminded of Windows Millenium Edition vs Windows 98 SE (remember its painful death?).

Anyway I have Vista running on two laptops, XP SP2 running on two desktops and a Leopard OS X. I would rather use my OS X, followed by XP SP2 than Vista - go figure why. [sly]

Vista Makes CNET UK's List of "Worst Consumer Tech"

Windows XP SP3 boasts speed boost

According to the Office performance benchmarks, Windows XP SP3 is also considerably faster than Vista SP1. "None of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than two times slower than the most current builds of its older sibling"

'nuff said. [laugh]

Hmm ... usually when I get a new PC/Notebook ... I'll reformat the harddisk ... partition it .... to :

- Small 10-15GB harddisk for C drive

- Then allocate the rest as D or E drive etc

Then install my OS on the C drive ... create the pagefile on the C drive.

So all my data seats in the D/E drive etc.

When I need to reinstall my OS ... just reformat my C drive and install and that's it.

Anybody does this also?

Yes, this is the way my company IT does it. You make a small partition for C drive, should be big enough to install your Windows OS and all your applications plus a bit of extra free space, just in case. Maybe 20G if your hardisk is big enough.

Use D or E for your data.

Besides, easy reformat of C for reinstall of OS in case of virus or other screwups; you can easily backup your data on D or E with Norton Ghost or other disk backup program.

It gets a bit more complicated if you use dual boot for Linux and Windows.wink.gif

Speaking from an IT person point of view, if you wanna stay out of trouble and headache, go for XP. My gf bought a new Laptop with Vista, some problem that she encountered and till now i can't solve it.

- MobTV cannot play (Dunno why)

- Canon MPC190 Printer no driver (Called Canon, tell me trade in the printer cause they not developing the drivers for it, BTW my printer oni 1.5yo)

- Programs compatibility issues, alot of 3rd party programs i have problems, always illegal operation (Nero, Memories To Go)

I am gonna downgrade it to XP to solve my problem.

hi Hoppie,

Based on the feedbacks, seems like it is better to stick to XP. I'll be getting a free laptop from starhub soon, wonder can I request them to downgrade to XP too? sweatdrop.gif

sorie bro... i think wat u mention is the minimum requirement... u always cant use wat is stated as the minimum requirement... for vista, at least 2gb of rams for optimal results...

u need at least 2gb ram

to run it smoothly

xp gobble 256mb of ram

vista gobble 512mb of ram

if your pc/laptop is 1 gb of ram

half gone to vista

while the rest will be shared among

anti-virus,anti spyware,firewall,msn, etc,etc

2GB??!! ... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

actually, RAMS are dirt cheap these few weeks..

i just upgraded my com to 3GB of RAM..and it cost me only 60 bucks for 2 pc of 1GB DDR2 667 RAM modules..

now i can totally turn off swap file in windows..

Agree wif you 100% !

IMO Vista is the worst piece of crap-sh*t that came out of Microsoft in the history of computing.

Should rename it to Piss-ta. This f**king CCB OS really pisses me off big time.

F**king UI must have been designed by some retarded a$$holes probably from Ah-neh land, who knows nothing of user experience.

Repulsive is the word here.
