still on XP..

i think i gonna wait for abt 4-6 more months before making the switch to Vista..let MS and other developers iron out all the problems first..

currently my system should have no prob running Vista..except maybe for the RAM..but now RAM damn cheap..1 piece of DDR2 1GB selling at $40 apiece.. [thumbsup]

It has gotten to the point of upgrade gives you more problem.

Recently, I bought Visio 2007 Pro. It did not want to install unless I have XP SP2.

I was happy with SP1 then. Since I paid so much for Visio, no choice but to upgrade to SP2.

Everything went well until I was forced to use BlackIce by my company.

The two don't get along and keep crashing with Blue Screen of Death.

Later, I found out that SP2 introduce this Data Execution Prevention, supposingly to protect the OS. Instead it got worst and crashed my notebook. I have since disabled DEP.

As for Vista..no thanks, unless I'm forced to use it.

When you are working with a notebook, you don't have time to keep getting more sh-t with supposingly better protection or better software.

i using Vista now. Tried a chinese game made in 2000 i think (Tian long ba bu) and it still works.

using office 2003 instead of 2007, same same.

the only problem i faced is my printer driver. using HP laserjet. cannot use manual duplex at all. searched online and other models also having this problem.

i'm still waiting for HP's technical support to reply me on this matter..

other than that, alright for me~~ looks nicer and the search within ur pc is super fast..

To me ... as long as can play CounterStrike ... ok liao .... [nod][nod]

Vista need higher ram to run for sure. Recommended 1.5GB or more.

But, if it crashes somehow, it will auto repair (good for IT newbies).

Usage in office is better than XP. Better chinese interface, searching for application easier than clicking run.

Not a must to have, but good to have. As for driver compatibility, can D/L in the website.

Conclusion:

Office use thumbsup.gif

Home use thumbsdown.gif

Searching for drivers can be .... [bigcry] ..... think stick to XP now better ....

Dear all,

With new Windows Vista on most new notebooks and PCs .... just wanna get some feedback.

A friend of mine bought an Acer lappie that came with Vista OS and the package includes a Norton anti-virus software subscription... thats only compatible with XP. So check it out before buying.

2GB??!! ... [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][/reply]

Now RAM so cheap and software application is so huge not optimise for size any more. So 2GB also very little. My notebook is running 2GB RAM now, wanna go to 4GB but this model only can support maximum 2GB [bigcry][bigcry]

So what significant advantage does Vista have over XP?

There isn't significant difference between Vista and XP.

But i would assume Vista gives less problem to end user. As my VP don't complain to me problem as often as his XP. I believe Vista Restoring/Self fixing is alot better than XP, i've seen his crashed Vista came to life itself.

Eventually driver compatibility issue will be sorted out, unless the hardware itself is very old.

When XP 1st came out, everyone debated on the issue between it previous OS too. But mainly due to a IT Tech myself, i need to advance than being left behind.

wife with ms. she uses vista and office2007. she stands up to it.

me, at home on xp and linux. imagine our clashes on OS when the topic comes up for discussion.

all in all, it's pointless to use Vista, unless you have core duo etc.. for my P4-478s, i'd stick to XP.

havin said that, i had a good on my wife's laptop vista, not too bad. just not enough to entice me.

and yeah, i'm gonna set up a 3.2G (still 478) w 2G ram, and still use XP.

I heard that Vista is kind of slow ... is it truth?

The usual complain is lack of drivers.

Some of your expensive hardware may not work without the drivers.wink.gif

Vista is just some marketing gimmick to keep Microsoft shareholder happy....and of coz more bells and whistles to tax the latest hardware, so you have to keep upgrading and upgrading.

Even Windows 2000 is good enough, there is nothing much more to improve, but we are forced to ...

My office latest server still comes with Windows 2003 R2 server, guess why no XP, no Vista...

Think I'll dump Vista for Windows XP instead .... [nod]

Just got a new notebook. Came with Vista...

Thought of downgrading but decided to play around the Vista for a while first. Now I gave up the idea of downgrading.

Trying it out and owning it is a different experience. You will come to appreciate the thought that got into the Vista.

Why worry about compatibility issues? Every problem can be solved. I manage to get a software written for Win95 to work on the Vista. My first try few months back failed on a test PC. Now that its my own, I manage to make it work...hahah... [:p]

Hmm ... usually when I get a new PC/Notebook ... I'll reformat the harddisk ... partition it .... to :

- Small 10-15GB harddisk for C drive

- Then allocate the rest as D or E drive etc

Then install my OS on the C drive ... create the pagefile on the C drive.

So all my data seats in the D/E drive etc.

When I need to reinstall my OS ... just reformat my C drive and install and that's it.

Anybody does this also?

the main diff is most XP edition except XP Pro edition are based on 32-bit platform.

vista is also based on 64bit platform.

So would Vista run faster on those 64bit CPUs?

Then maybe you should change it back to XP ... like that your VP will need you more .... so you get to keep your job right? [laugh][laugh]

Tell your VP ... "VP should us XP ... both are P ... P = Perfect" .... [laugh][laugh]
