Eyke Supercharged October 12, 2007 Share October 12, 2007 car WILL SKID when you don't have ABS and stomp hard enough to lock up your wheels, no matter what tire of whatever compound/grip/traction you use. compound/grip/traction only comes into the equation to affect braking distance when wheels are not locked. ↡ Advertisement
Rentabass Neutral Newbie October 12, 2007 Share October 12, 2007 (edited) Yes, you have a point there, but if all things equal (i.e. same braking force applied), a tire with a grippier compound will definitely stop in a shorter distance. On an ABS equipped car, slamming on the brakes with a grippy set of tires will set the ABS off later than if you were to stand on the brakes with less grippy tires - this is testament to how tires would affect braking. Perhaps I'm making the mistake of reading you incorrectly. In your expert opinion, what is the most important factor in reducing braking distance? Eyke Supercharged October 12, 2007 Share October 12, 2007 at risk of sounding like a broken record, i'll rephrase: Cause of lockup (for non-ABS) & ABS coming on is ONLY due to high brake force applied. by saying: "grippy set of tires will set the ABS off later", you imply that "grippier" tires can somehow reduce the braking force applied. maybe you'll like to elaborate how you think that works? i no expert but i would think the following would affect braking distance: - weight of car - efficiency of braking system (brake fluid, pads, rotors, etc) - force applied on brake pedal - tire width/profile, compound, weight - rim weight & weight distribution
Rentabass Neutral Newbie October 12, 2007 Share October 12, 2007 (edited) http://www.turnfast.com/tech_brakes/brakes_balancing2.shtml Tires are scientifically proven to be a major factor in braking, along with other factors mentioned in the above article. After all, they ARE your only points of contact with the ground. Edited October 12, 2007 by Rentabass

Rentabass Neutral Newbie October 17, 2007 Share October 17, 2007 If I recall correctly, 205/50 R15 is closer to the stock rolling diameter...looks sexier too! ...but you'll need at least 15x7 rims for that...

Rentabass Neutral Newbie October 17, 2007 Share October 17, 2007 Basket...means the tire shop bluff me last time. Good information. To think just a few days ago, I was just wondering why 17x7.5 can fit up to 225 and even 235 section width, but 15x6.5 cannot accomodate 205 (according to what that tire shop told me about my old car 2 years ago). Eyke Supercharged October 18, 2007 Share October 18, 2007 Quote hi. im using accent 13inch. so far i cannot find good tyres that fit on 13inch if you really want good tyres, then upgrade your rims. the logic is simple: if you don't mind 13" rims, you probable also won't mind lousy tyres. therefore, few, if any, manufacturers make good tyres for puny 13" rims.
