Icekitten Clutched September 1, 2007 Share September 1, 2007 Would like to ask: Is there any need or any way to groom a car which is sprayed matt? Any cons of matt paint as compared to glossy paint? TIA! ↡ Advertisement
Number19 Neutral Newbie September 3, 2007 Share September 3, 2007 Really don't think there's any need to groom it since the purpose is to be matt. It would appear to me tat glossy paint will reflect heat better than a matt one.. but as to whether the difference is negligible.. Cheers
Icekitten Clutched September 4, 2007 Author Share September 4, 2007 Actually I was wondering about things like fine scratches. Since glossy paint is often polished and waxed and has a protective layer which can be renewed. And matt paint is just that? So it is actually not protected? Or is there also some kind of protective coating? And also things like oily stains from dirty hands or petrol. Was hoping I could get some info from the extensive group of car owners here. I tried doing a search on matt paint and matt automotive paint on Google but nothing useful came up.
Kaer Neutral Newbie September 4, 2007 Share September 4, 2007 Been playing with the idea of a new coat of matt paint but haven't gotten down since unable to find the glooming details. Let me know if you do!
Number19 Neutral Newbie September 4, 2007 Share September 4, 2007 Its not really the difference in the paint per se, its more about the finish. Gloss finish is finer than a matt finish. You can observe this in photographs (gloss finish vs matte) I would also deduce that because matt finish is less fine, it is porous and will tend to trap dirt and oil. In this case I wouldn't use a car shampoo, I will use something to remove all traces of oil (typical detergent). As for scratches since they can't be removed by polishing, you will instead have to add on another coat of matt paint. Or better still, touch up the affected area, wetsand it and leave it as that The above is based on my logic but I could be wrong because it is really very counter intuitive for me
Friendstar Supercharged September 4, 2007 Share September 4, 2007 i saw a lexus RX300 with black matt paint it looks unique at first but after thinking for a while, i tink its silly. reasons stated by bros
Rliewky 1st Gear September 4, 2007 Share September 4, 2007 any picture of how a matt black car may look like?
Jascyt Neutral Newbie September 4, 2007 Share September 4, 2007 Sis, your new widebody monster intending to reborn in matt black ah? From my limited knowledge of maintaining the matt black finishes on parts of my car, I concluded that matt black is very difficult to keep clean as stains are very easily spotted and it seems to attract dirt more easily than gloss paint. Watermarks are very obvious too. Maintaining will be wash with shampoo, No point to claybar since it isn't smooth surfaced to begin with. Tried to polish/wax before with various different products like Autoglym Resin polish, Xymol cleaner wax, HiGlaze88.. horrible Finally found the best one that doesn't stain yet gives the nice waxed beading effect, Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax (#845)
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 5, 2007 Share September 5, 2007 Jascyt has pretty much covered it. One more thing though, matte paint i've noticed is more susceptible to chipping than gloss paint. I'm guessing its because there isn't as thick a layer of clear over it as protection.
Icekitten Clutched September 6, 2007 Author Share September 6, 2007 (edited) Intending to have bonnet and boot in matt black. Body another colour. But yeah, pretty concerned about oil stains and paint chips/scratches. Haven't sent for spraying yet so still got time to change to glossy if I want. Although really wanna try out matt. You know, don't try won't feel satisfied. Hehe So you've tried izit? And matt paint can actually still be waxed with that particular wax you mentioned without staining or destroying its look? Icekitten Clutched September 6, 2007 Author Share September 6, 2007 Yeah, that came across my mind too. That's why I started this thread, wondering if there are any ways to groom or detail matt paint surfaces. DIY with touch up paint is probably not feasible too since one can't be touching up all the time and it can be seen that it's a touch-up too.
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 6, 2007 Share September 6, 2007 From my friend's cars, not much can be done. Touch-ups seem less noticeable though. Btw since its just boot and bonnet, why don't u just use a matt black sticker sheet?
Number19 Neutral Newbie September 6, 2007 Share September 6, 2007 If you do the whole body matt black like I've seen on some overseas VW Golfs, it can look pretty mean. Kinda like stealth fighter plane
Icekitten Clutched September 6, 2007 Author Share September 6, 2007 Oh I mean only the boot and bonnet will be matt black. The rest of the car will be another colour, but matt paint too.
Icekitten Clutched September 6, 2007 Author Share September 6, 2007 Hehe....too black for me liao. At the moment not in favour of having an all black car yet.

Yup my spoiler, v-lip and sideskirt extensions are in matt black. Honestly, Guang there the painter not fabulous.. somehow matt black quite obvious when there's imperfections in the paintwork. The wax I use now is good at keeping the matt surfaces looking clean without stains and stuff like that. But if you're doing only the bonnet & boot, I concur with the bro above who advised to get stickers instead. I feel it'll be even easier to maintain rather than paint. And if one day u sian of the look, just tear off and you get another colour
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 6, 2007 Share September 6, 2007 I think the colour choice itself will determine how easy or hard it would be to maintain, but overall easier with non-matte paint.
Sickscientist Clutched September 6, 2007 Share September 6, 2007 I'd rather u wrap it up in matt black sticker than paint them.... ↡ Advertisement
