Try_conti 2nd Gear August 27, 2007 Share August 27, 2007 In that case, wouldn't the 0W-40 be a bit too thick for the Octy since its 1.8T compliant ? Is the xW-30 semi-syn ?
Tiger21 Clutched August 27, 2007 Share August 27, 2007 Is it worth it? Used to sell at $9.90 last year and was wipe-out from the shelves last year. Now 4 quarts is already $51.60. AMSOIL is $15 per quart (buy 12 bottles) is $60 for 4 quarts. maybe better?
Koolaba 1st Gear August 27, 2007 Author Share August 27, 2007 The weight 30 oils are fully synthetic. However they do not have the VW specifications. The 0W-40 should work fine on the 1.6SR powerplant. 0W-40 http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil...il_1_0W-40.aspx xW-30 http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil...il_1_5W-30.aspx http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil...l_1_10W-30.aspx
Koolaba 1st Gear August 27, 2007 Author Share August 27, 2007 (edited) Well, the consumer makes the final decision. The Mobil 1 0W-40 meets the current specifications of all VAG engines available locally. The Amsoil 5W-40 Synthetic European Car Fomula misses out on the VW 503.01 specification. From the analysis of the typical properties of the Mobil 1 0W-40 and Amsoil 5W-40 obtained online, I would say the specifications are quite similar, in my capacity as a non oil-guru. In certain parameters, the Amsoil 5W-40 pales in comparison to the Mobil 1 0W-40 e.g. flash point, pour point, viscosity index. Why pay more for a similarly specified product without the ability to utilise its purported long oil drain interval under our local driving conditions? I havent seen a Toyota fully syn motor oil before. Only saw the mineral versions being sold in Singapore. Lexus 5w40 have though. Very cheap but I doubt Borneo uses it to service Lexus. I see, thought 5w-30 oil is thin..u tried 0w-40 before? Maybe I'll try the lexus oil next time. Yup I agree. The Castrol 5w40 is thick and creamy. 0w-40 is good as well. Castrol is slightly quieter. Disclaimer: never used it on Toyota before. Ran it on Optra which requires w40 oil. Edited November 29, 2013 by Glyuen
