Recently just had a lot of trouble with my computer.

Firstly, it just restarts or trips even before my windows xp starts to load. its like someone pulled the powerplug and the whole comp trips.

Then, it either restarts or just go dead, with no activity or lights. I had to whack the side pretty hard to kick start it again.

Third, even when it loads to my xp, the mouse hangs and freezes!!!! so i have to press reset and then the cycle repeats

So everytime i have hit the casing or reset several time before the thing functions properly.

Does anybody know what is happening to my comp? Is it power box or the harddisk or the mother board or my software problem? My comp almost 2 yrs old P4 2.6 Ghz. Is it advisable to change motherboard, CPU, etc..... ?

For this "Firstly, it just restarts or trips even before my windows xp starts to load. its like someone pulled the powerplug and the whole comp trips."

Maybe its the heatsink of ur cpu is not properly seated thus causing the cpu to overheat and therefore restarted itself. Try applying new thermal paste and reseat the heatsink?

"Then, it either restarts or just go dead, with no activity or lights. I had to whack the side pretty hard to kick start it again"

Something inside loose, causing open circuits?

"Third, even when it loads to my xp, the mouse hangs and freezes!"

Sorry, no idea whats at fault. Loose connections?

not sure of the course, try to run Memtest86 for your ram, scan for bad sector on your harddisk and see the result.

possible cause should be power supply, window corrupt or overheating that cause unusual restart and freezing.

is your p4 2.6 using the 478 or 755 socket?

if using 755 socket motherboard, DDR2 ram and PCI-E, then can consider to upgrade. if not, it is actually quite expensive to upgrade an old generation PC as AGP and DDR ram is more expensive than PCI-E and DDR2 ram. but before deciding on the upgrade option, wish you good luck in finding the solution to your computer problem.

many possibilities.

check if your PSU (power supply unit) is already dying. Power issues don't play play. Whacking the side of your PC shouldn't be a way to fix a computer bro. [sweatdrop]

your mouse freezing issue is interesting. but the best thing to do is to make sure all connections are firmly in place first.

could b insufficient power due to lousy PSU.

other then tat... lousy graphic card/ ram, but likely graphic card 1st.

or ur CPU fan is not running, therefore overheat.

solution:

open casing to take a look, see if cpu fan running.

2nd, if u r running hyperthread, take out 1 ram and see if ok, replace back and test with other

one possibility is one or more components could be faulty or not properly seated (ie, not fully inserted into the slot). as such the POST (power on self-test) failed causing it to reboot.

From my previous multiple experience.

1)U got a dead mobo

2)U PSU is overload and dying

3)U got a bad ram issue

To overcome this prob

1)Have only 1 HDD

2)Have only 1 strip of Ram

3)NO other USB devices

If this powers up well and stable, mean u got ram or PSU overload prob. [laugh]

U can try reinstall your software. the other clean cut is to back up your documents and reformat the harddisk. If this fails, means yr computer got some hardware problem. Can bring to those shops that do diagnostic test.

1. does your PC always hang before this problem occur ?

2. after kicking and banging did u check the connections ?

3. when u cycle it for the mouse did u kick and bang again ?

4. did u add any new devices or software ?

5. your PC is OEM or a branded one ?

sorry so many question to ans. haha but this is troubleshooting.
