Elfenstar 3rd Gear August 22, 2007 Share August 22, 2007 ... or with twin scroll turbos(new breed of turbos) ... Superchargers are ideal for low end, Turbochargers for high end. Ahem... both wrong bro. Twin scroll turbos have been around for a longgggg... time. and superchargers for low end??? not necessarily as there are centrifugal type than can make some good boost and still have lag. Turbochargers good for high end... not exactly anymore either. Although old tech (they've been around for more than a decade), the newer variable geometry turbos can give the best of both worlds. Still limited to the power figures of mid-sized ones of old but with virtually no lag down below. ↡ Advertisement
Elfenstar 3rd Gear August 22, 2007 Share August 22, 2007 Maybe on track like PG where a 6speeder not appropriate cos got to shift alot as band too close, e 5speed's more idea. You think thats bad I had a peek into this guys racing truck (think semi-trailer) abt 2 mths back... 19 gears
Wrcfan 1st Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 Eh heheh.. Maybe I'm old skool, but standard old superchargers & not hybrids of new are ideally for low end, and now hybrids(tuners' SC) have been tuned for best of both worlds. Like you said, when its best of both worlds, whether SC or TC still not ideal for big HP tune cos are still too small and cannot produce big HP. Thats why Twin turbo set-ups are still used commonly these days, but still like e lag and sudden outburst of power from giant snails. Hehehe
Wrcfan 1st Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 (edited) 19 gears??? I'm poor with maths, will properbly forget wat gear I'm in after a lap. I've even lost count shifting with paddle shifts. Edited August 23, 2007 by Wrcfan
Elfenstar 3rd Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 You don't feel the lag in racing situations. More often that not you'll prolly be relatively high in the rev range. Btw, its 19 gears with 2 gearsticks to make it more confusing
Vblaster_w211 2nd Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 (edited) Not only NA engines, Turbo chargers are also laggy at low end b4 it spools, thats why those models that are 5 speed either come with tiny turbos or with twin scroll turbos(new breed of turbos) which aren't idea for big hp but have less turbo lag. 6spd is therefore preferred for those who want big hp with big turbos as rev band is closer. Tat properbly the reason why Subaru has come up with 2.5l engines to compensate the low end lag with higer torque figs at lower rpm & VW came up with the TC & SC engine of the Golf GT. Superchargers are ideal for low end, Turbochargers for high end. NA engines are more linear than TC engines. But high performance NA engines usually depend on high rev powerband, hence the use of close ratio gears with the 6th gear so that cruising is tolerable. What you stated in general is true, but AMG SC engines are high end power monsters as well. SC is definitely more linear than TC also, but the power for both depends largely on level of boost. Wrcfan 1st Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 'You don't feel the lag in racing situations. More often that not you'll prolly be relatively high in the rev range.' Yup, but a cab with a LPT would cream u from stop/start situations unless u're set up with anti-lag etc.

Wrcfan 1st Gear August 23, 2007 Share August 23, 2007 [sweatdrop]U mentioned AMG. World renown tuners like these can do anything! But they also use V engines & big displacement so definitely got lots of power regardless low or sky high. Poor man like me only talking bout puny, low roadtax mass market engines here.
