Brake Rotor

Any bros out there can advise if uneven brake rotors can be filed even without replacing new ones? If so, any workshop to recommend? Thanks.

Yes you can skim brake rotors. (I think you meant skimming and not file)

 

However, it is only recommended to do it once. Why not buy a new rotors, rotors aren't too expensive, usually OEM ones are 100+ for both sides!

Well, actually my friend asked me about it but I'm not sure. I did tell my friend to replace a new pair of rotors but he wanted to know if it could be skimmed, as you mentioned. Any good workshop to recommend for this? Thanks.

the fact that the rotor need skimming means the

integrity of the rotor is no longer in tact,

skimming a just a temp solution, a few months down the road,

u will need a new set of rotor, then arent u spending more?

skimming cost plus new rotors.

furthermore, it is the brakes that ur fren is trying to save on,

which is one of the very impt component of the car.

my suggestion is to get a new set of rotor unless the car is going to

be scrapped soon then that is a different story.

anyway skimming can be done by most workshop. dun think there are workshop

specialise in skimming of rotors.

aside from replacing the rotors (or skimming them) you should find out why the rotors are not wearing out evenly.

Simple, Ask him what happens if he find that he cannot brake on time(due to the rotors wrap) on an expressay travelling at 100km/hour.

coz i learned it the hard way,

ie skimmed rotor and change rotor after a few months

just to share my $$ wasting experience.

the common reason why rotor warp is becoz of uneven expansion and contraction

eg. after a hard drive, with hot rotor, drive straight to a car wash.

Sometimes I do wash my car right after a long drive. Does the loud "clack" sound when depressing the brakes be the result of washing car while rotor still hot? Checked with my mechanic before & they said it's normal.

the sound is ur rotor contracting when it come in contact with water.

of coz it is normal but it is damn bad for ur rotor unless ur rotor is 2 pcs rotor then it is quite warp resistence as there are allowances for expansion and contraction since it is 2 pcs.

as a gd habit wash car after car has been stopped for as least an hr,

just like we let the engine temp to climb a bit before we start whacking the car rite?

uneven braking and loss of braking power,

the feeling is like ur ABS kicking in but the braking power is greatly reduced and increase in braking distance.

normally u wont feel it at normal speed,

but if u hit high speed and need to brake suddenly and only find out at that point that ur rotor is warp, then.........

there are other reason to warp rotor.

already our rotor is taking lots of punishment of stopping the car and generating lots of heat.

some will argue that if cannot wash car after a long hard drive, then what happen if it rain suddenly wont the rotor warp?

yes, it will but that is something that we cant help but what we can do is to minimise the chance warping our rotor. therefore better let car "cool down" first before washing it.

other reason is braking over long distances, like coming down from genting.

the temp gets so high that it excess that brake pads is design for, then brake will fade, next to go is the rotor as it has reached it max temp and got no place for expansion and then WARP!

Err..2 piece rotors? How to tell? What makes of cars have 2 piece rotors? Sorry, quite new on this.

from what i know, certain models of those aftermarket big brake kits comes with 2 pcs rotors, like brembo GT, Espec etc. if stock most like the rotor is monoblock ie 1 pc.
