Re-gapping of Spark Plugs

I just realized that a set of NGK Iridium spark plugs which I have bought previously had a gapping of 1.1mm. However, according to my ride's manual, the spark plugs which requires had a gapping of only 0.9mm.

The question is:-

Q1. Can anyone enlighten me about whether Iridium plugs are able to re-gap?

Q2. Is the process of re-gapping difficult?or every mechanic should know how to do it?

Q3. Is it advisable to continue using spark plugs with a larger gapping, for instance 1.1mm, as compared to the specs of 0.9mm? Any side issues?

1. Iridium plugs are able to re-gap..just need the correct tools.. I.E Filler Gauge

2. Its pretty simple actually All mechanics shld know how to do it.

3. Not ideal, cos the spark plugs will not perform at its optimum lvl, and might mis-fire causing incomplete cobmustion.

heya,

all spark plugs are regappable, it's nothing special. even you can do it yourself as long as you have the energy to lift up a spoon to eat.

regapping is nothing more than RE-Gapping, adjusting the gap to suit the conditions of the vehicle

as for question 3, it is imperative that you choose a spark plug that suits your car. choosing a larger gapping won't result in a mis-fire...... tsk tsk, choosing a plug that's the wrong heat range will....

well, just to explain abit further, how far you 'gap' the plug will determine how far the spark/arc will have to jump. if you're an engineer or do welding, you'll know that the closer it is, the 'stronger' the arc. the further it is, it may not even jump there if the voltage can't arc it.

so now you have an idea of what gapping is.

if you check my website, i have a DIY on modifying your spark plugs. =)

Neutral Newbie

sparkplug gapping relies on said sparkplug's specs or the car specs for regapping? i always though different sparkplugs should be gapped differently?

The gap size depends very much on the spark plug heat range and the High tension coil or ignitor kV output. With after market high KV ouput coil or ignitor it is best to increase the spark plug gap as much as 20%. Without the wider gap size the high KV will not be able to generate more powerful sparks.

not exactly bro

Plats should not be regapped. The become fairly brittle with use.

Iridiums can be, but be more careful coz their electrodes are a lot more susceptible to damage than copper (that is why most manufacturers recommend not to re-gap them).

Nope. Do not regap platinum plugs, not unless you would like the chance of the plat plating on the ground electrode breaking off in the engine.

As for the iridiums, you need a needle type gapping tool as the slide type will damage the centre electrode, thats why i said extra care is needed.

Edit: I almost forgot. Iridium plugs with platinum coated ground electrodes should not be re-gapped for the same reason.
