Reng Neutral Newbie August 6, 2007 Share August 6, 2007 Some news to share: Chinese automaker Chery to supply engines to Italy's Fiat Mon, Aug 06, 2007 AP (Associated Press) BEIJING (AP) -- Italian automaker Fiat SpA has signed a deal to buy engines from China's biggest domestic automaker, Chery Automobile Co., a state news agency reported Monday. Chery will supply Fiat with 100,000 engines a year, the Xinhua News Agency reported. The agreement by Chery, which is eager to expand abroad, comes just one month after the company sealed a deal to manufacture small cars for Chrysler Group. Chery and Fiat signed a memorandum of understanding eight months ago, and auto industry media had reported that an engine supply deal was imminent. "The agreement means that Fiat, who had been testing Chery's engines during the past year, have recognized the technologies and quality of the engines developed by Chery," Xinhua quoted Chery Deputy General Manager Zhou Biren as saying. Zhou said the two companies are "exploring possibilities" on other cooperation, Xinhua reported, without giving details. ↡ Advertisement

Albeniz Turbocharged August 6, 2007 Share August 6, 2007 After installing the Chery engine, FIAT will live up to its name. FIAT means (F)ix (I)t (A)gain, (T)ony. Tony is a common name for mechanic.

Bearbear1494 Clutched August 6, 2007 Share August 6, 2007 I'm guessing the engines that Chery will be making for Fiat are those small capacity ones mainly for use in models sold to China & other countries like perhaps South Africa. The ones that the Asean markets get may be a mixture of Chinese-made engines & Fiat-made. Anyway, pretty good move on Fiat's part, as long as they keep enforcing their own QC standards on the Chinese. Hopefully the cost savings will be passed on to consumers, not just the Fiat shareholders.
Watwheels Supersonic August 6, 2007 Share August 6, 2007 I guess what the Fiat Group is trying to prevent its organisation from going into financial difficulties on the long run. The selling of mass volume small cars is to help its group stay afloat in the automobile industry. The British car makers is a good example of failing. Th Americans are chocking up losses too. Except for the Japanese, Koreans and up coming Chinese.
Hicksau Neutral Newbie August 6, 2007 Share August 6, 2007 not surprising.. almost all car brands buy their engines from china nowadays.. merc, chrysler, vw.. and many more are buyin their bulk of their engine components or engines from china .. jap cars also included.. its only car brands that are not really very trenched in global market are not doin so yet .. like fiat, skoda ... but they are startin to do what majority of car makers are already doin..
