Seems like the gambling ( legal type) have increased with the economic boom we are currently experiencing.

I can see more ppl spending more than desirable in placing bets for various forms of gambling availiable under legal betting houses and the authorities are really not addressing the issue well or keeping a control of ppl from getting addicted.

By personal view is that if one would to consistently spend more than $50 per month on bets of any kind , it would be considered that there is a HIGH POSSIBILITY OF A GAMBLING ADDICTION IN THAT PERSON.

But I get different views of what qualifies as a gambling addiction of the ppl I had asked.

What's your view? [;)]

I personally think that if you are finding yourself placing bets consistently, you are addicted?

I think addiction is not measured by the amount of money you spend...

brother, it really boils down to a % of income rather than absolute $$.

$600 = addict? what if one earns 10k a month 600 only 6%. compare this to only earning 3k 20%

also i think it takes more than 1 factor to consider an addict.

such as behaviour. have to find out 4d toto result the moment they are out, everyweek need to look for MJ kaki, if no MJ dunno what to do...& etc

- Person A spends $1 on ToTo every day each year

- Person B spends $150 on Toto on AngBao toto each year

Who is the addict here?

If you are referring to other types of 'entertainment' [sly] ...then I agree that money alone might not be used as a yardstick in defining addiction..but NOT for gambling.

Simply becos the other social problems that arose from addiction to gambling is simply that the money could have been better used to address these ppl other needs but was 'diverged' to the placing of bets.

So the amount of $$$ spend on bets is a good indicator of an impending gambling addiction rather than the crave for something ( the BIG strike) that eludes the person consistently and yet that person keep hitting onto it to make it happen.

To me, if one thinks about any form of gambling at least 3 times a week, it's addiction already.

Incidentally, if i'm not wrong, thats also the average number of times Singaporeans have sex [lipsrsealed]

So.... if any vice is more important than sex (which so happens to be a vice), its an addiction. [laugh]

Wa lau, Spore Poolkie collect >$2000 worth of bets every month from me during EPL season. So does it mean I am addicted? I don't think so leh.

I think it is all about whether one can afford to lose that money or not. [:)]

I think u left out something on your poll. U should pit the amount spent on gambling against the amount the gambler earns. By looking at the ratio we can see what percentage he's using his pay for gambling.

This is correct, I have a classmate, started gambling when he was in uni, small $2 bets at the pokies (one arm bandits), 5c per game. But he did it everyday as it was conveniently located between his home and uni. The problem arose not when he lost $2 everyday, but when he won $500 on a 5c bet! Then he started to think, "damn, if I only had betted 10c, it would've been $1000, or 50c, it would've been $5000, or $1....$10000!" and the permutations go on....but from that day onwards, he consistently kept raising his stakes until oneday he asked to borrow money from me, not to cover his debts, but to buy lunch! Luckily for him, he realised his mistake and was disciplined enough to stop, he later revealed that he had lost an estimated $100k over three years (and this is a student!)...and it all started with a 5c bet...

I think there a a few forumers here who have a misconception about HOW I DEFINE gambling as a addiction.

At the end of the day, the nation cannot care much for the few who could throw $2000 away every month but that person makes more than $20,000 per month. For these ppl, you can define addiction to gambling or not anyway you want.

The whole concept about why the State allows 'legalised' gambling and not others is becos they have a MORAL obligation to the rest of the ppl.

And to speak the truth, if any would to go to any betting outlets, you'll noticed that many of these ppl could do with less bets being placed and more deverged to their other more pressing needs.

To open the flood gate where there are no control on the amount one should be able to place on bet is to have more unpleasant social problems to arise.

So hopefully, for those rich bros and sis here ( which I know there are quite a few) [sly] your views are much appreciated but the real gist is really to understand where is the middle ground where the typical men-on-the-street should know appropriately HOW MUCH would really be unwise to place as bets monthly or else it would signal as a form of addiction coming into play.

Neutral Newbie

I think you should be clear in your question.

The amount you put as options in your poll is not clear.

Is that amount, the amount of money one loss in a month or is that amount the amount of money place bet in a month?

For example, if I budget myself not to loss more than $100 a month, but I could be playing SCORE EPL with more than $1K of bet every month, so what option should I choose?

For people who bet 4D and toto, it is <0.1% chance of winning. But for people who bet soccer, it is totally different.
