Looking for car camera to catch vandal

I am also looking at installing a car cam, can share how much u paid and is it effective as I understand most recorded on SD cards (up to 2GB mem) and capture only via motion sensor, unlike CCTV recorder. If can have something like what our SBS/SMRT buses currently install, think is some kind of "prowler" brand will be idea. But car batt is always an issue, very surprised that no one has yet come out with a energy saving all in one product in this technology advanced era.

I was thinking of some DIY, to hook up those GSM Vodadone/Huawei adapter and feed it via 12V Batt, sent the video stream via internet back to your home PC recorder. Anyone has any info? I think Carrefour is selling an 12V external batt & jumpstart kit, pretty reasonable price, not sure how long it last.

If your daily driving pattern is various short distance start-stop journeys, then your battery will not be charged adequate enough to attain the full charged capacity and that is when you will encounter battery running flat in the morning when trying to start your car.

Initially I have 3 units installed. Each unit comes with a motion detect CCTV and a SD card data recorder. CCTV comsumption @ DC12V, 300mA and the recorder has a power requirement of DC5V, 1A. Note that the recorder does not specify the comsumption but instead the requirement. I would guess the comsumption will be slightly less than the 1A due to some losses down the electronics/electrical accessories.

After 1 week of installation and only switched on for approx 10hrs daily, my 3 months old 65AH battery went flat. Note that the motion detect trigger the recorder to record only 10 seconds of video footage. In a typical night of that 10 hours, only less than 30 minutes of recording is captured, the rest of the time, the system is in standby mode. Changed to a 90AH battery, again the battery went flat after 3 weeks. Finally decided to remove 2 units and only retain the front facing camera and the situation is much better with no flat battery so far.

So power draw from the car battery is really a concern if your driving style does not ensure it achieve fully charged capacity.

My units were also from Prestige Security Pte Ltd.

3 units, each with its own SD car recorder [sweatdrop], think you spend a bomb. In that case I believe the other 2 units which you removed are in cold storage, can loan me for testing before committing the new one. [:p] I am on tight budget, will you consider sell to me the spare one?

The boss of Prestige Security Pte Ltd was kind enough to take back the other 2 units after much discussion with him. [thumbsup]

So I am sorry that I do not have any spare. You can contact Prestige Security Pte Ltd for a demonstration. Last heard that they have a new product in their lineup.

how much u paid for yr cam system from prestige? Its interesting to note that a 65Ah batt can die with jus 10 hrs of recording a week. And its a SD card based system somemore.. if u use those Hard disk based ones, think it might not last even one night. [sweatdrop]

Anyway thats why I also didnt wana use the HD based one though it can give u 4 cams.. good for all round protection. Mine's a diy SD based system.

Give u a tip...it's quite simple to get around your flat battery problem, instead of changing to a big ass battery, jus get a battery monitor lor, less than a certain voltage, then it automatically switches the whole system off.

Initially, the 3 system installed is to cover the front, the left and the right side. But the drain on the battery due to my daily short driving trips left me with no choice. I have to disconnect the left and right system to prevent me with even more headache/worry of trying to jump start car.

A single system cost $7** including wiring and installation. The more systems installed, the cheaper the price.

Those HD based system can only be installed in CISCO vehicle. However, those vehicle never switch off their engine when they go on duties, even when the driver is waiting inside the vehicle waiting for the escorts to return.

I ever thought of installing a battery monitor/saver. However due to my daily short driving trips, I will rather live with the single front system.

There are ways to park a car so that the vandal will find it difficult/risky to scratch the car's sides to aviod being captured on video. Moreover, after so much complains from vehicle owners of the same carpark, the town council has installed 24 hours video cam monitoring system in the MCP.

Can PM on your DIY system? I intend to install a low price system just to monitor the outside of my house to safeguard my shoes. Some kid has been stealing shoes from outside my unit and my neighbour's. [:|]
