with a comment like that, straightaway i noe the SE knows nuts abt cars. its light steering thats dangerous, not giving enuf feedback when cornering.

Light or Heavy steering is good or bad depending on which salesperson you talk to. [:)]

hyundai cars like sonata, avante, all loose steering.. like toy car, or even lighter. hahha.. [;)]

have you drove japanese cars with light steering like jazz too?

avante is only light when at low speeds.

So light steering == toy car? Then whats the purpose of inventing power assisted steering? Might as well go back to none-power steering 'technology'. [hur]

If you can't deal with heavy steering, you are just a man with knots for muscles. Shouldn't be driving at all. laugh.gif

I guess dealing and preference is two different issues here.

If I were to drive non-stop for 7 hours straight back to SG from Cameron, I will prefer a brick over the accelerator pedal and 'light as feather' steering. heh.

(edited)

I would say that the SE is not giving him a correct picture of how light/heavy steering should be.

As for cornering, how fast can you corner? How sharp is the corner? Can your car even corner? 140km/hr on a 1 lane 100 degree bend?

I find it strange that people are lumping cornering and power assisted steering of a passenger car together.

I believe handling involves a lot of other things than just a 'heavy' steering feedback, there are other factors like body roll, tire grip as well.

Even with all the steering feedback in the world but with lousy tires and bad driving..etc, no one can make it out of a most gentlest bend.

Just my opinion.

I am driving honda city, which is power assisted steering..

I am juz curious why avante's steering is so light that it feels like "arcade steering wheel"

when I turn during test drive, always oversteer.. quite dangerous if I might say.. slight movement of my hand will result in a big movement

Got the opportunity to drive it above 80kph. managed to convince the SE to allow me to run a few rounds in the area. [:p]

Avante is only light during lower speeds, when higher speeds, the steering stiffens. I forgot what fancy name they call this 'technology'. But apparently it's the first of its kind among the hyundai cars.

I guess on the plus side, you can do U turns at traffic lights with just a finger.

So far, most of the cars I test drove, the steering are lighter than my previous ride. So I guess it's a relief for me. [laugh]

Neutral Newbie

I think light steering for avante is subjective. I did not encounter any oversteer/understeer problems with my avante, and I appreciate it's light steering instead.

Drove a car with no power steering before, that's HEAVY STEERING. Really appreciated electric-assisted steering after that. By the way, i think the se is quite crappy but i guess he's only trying to sell the car.

Power steerings are hydraulic systems, not electrical. Thats why you have power steering fluid. [wave]

Manual racks are heavy only when the car is not moving or at very low speeds (i.e. parking). Once you get going, its fine. You get a more positive response and feedback as everything from the ground to your hands is a mechanical linkage.

i beg to differ. for highway, i'd prefer heavy steering.

for twisties like camerons, genting, heavy steering too.

for parking and parking lot dash, then light steering rocks [sly]

mine is a getz, steering is rather heavy, made worse by imitation sports steering wheel (smaller diameter) [flowerface]

Many cars these days have electric power steering [nod]

Some examples are the new Mini, Honda Civic 2.0, Renault Megane, Suzuki Swift, Honda Jazz and many more.

In fact the Suzuki Wagon R from 1996 already had electric power steering with no fluid [laugh]

I guessed the SE juz din not allow me to go to higher speeds / more roads, which made me not so appreciative of the steering.. anyway, new target - the mit lancer 2008!

I test drove Avante before. Steering is light but still acceptable. The car looks huge and the light steering makes controlling it very easy.

Steering feel? Is it important? Not for me cos I do not kup corner. I prefer a leisurely drive. As one bro mentioned, the Avante steering stiffen up when your speed increases. It is only at slow speed that the steering is light and comfortable. Not many cars have such a nicety I think.

Agree.

Light steering is good during parking. makes parking a whole lot easier. can do adjustments easier than heavy steering.

A lot of difference. I drove a non assisted steering car over the highway at high speeds. The feel was excellent. Even for a 3 point or U turn, the feedback wonderful. Won't allow you to do silly things. However, the only dread is doing parallel parking.

nowadays electric power steering so common and it varies with your speed.

even my van has EPS and switches off when reach 60-70kph speeds
