Anabolic 1st Gear June 26, 2007 Share June 26, 2007 Was thinking of hooking up one of my mp3 players to my car stereo so that i could play songs from the mp3 player. Instead of finding propriety adapters to fit into the car stereo (ipod, etc), is it possible just to connect the mp3 player with the car stereo set via the 3.5mm output? If the car stereo has an aux out, i could just plug that into the mp3 player 3.5mm plug and i'm good to go. i don't mind controlling music from the mp3 player itself, i just put it on shuffle and continuous play. I'm not an audiophile, but i would want at least decent quality music, i think a 3.5mm input would be a good compromise. What i'm wondering is what if my headunit doesn't seem to have an aux out/3.5mm connector? Am i forced to use an fm transmitter? Is it possible to go to a car audio shop and get the technicians to splice out an aux-out 3.5mm cable out for me? If it's possible, how much would it cost and could anyone recommend any shops? Thanks to anyone who could assist me in this simple i.c.e. question! ↡ Advertisement
Spinworkx Clutched June 26, 2007 Share June 26, 2007 Unfortunately, most lower end HU do not have Aux inputs. Only the mid and high end ones do. And if yours do not, then thre's no way to add one...other than using a transmitter. There is another way ...there's a new device that you can add to your amplifier(if you have one), this will create an AUX in so you can plug the mp3 player direct to the amp...but i think it's better to just change to a HU that has an aux in...a cheap Pioneer mid range will cost only $200+ that has an aux in (must buy the adapter, $30)

Anabolic 1st Gear June 27, 2007 Author Share June 27, 2007 thanks guys for the replies. will check to see if my headunit has an aux in. any headunits with aux in that are reasonable in price?
Hyun Neutral Newbie June 27, 2007 Share June 27, 2007 the interesting thing is, possibly ALL cd players, high or low end, can be modified to have an optical out. and when the output is handled by a processor, that makes expensive head units less and less worthwhile when you bypass its other functions. Anabolic 1st Gear June 27, 2007 Author Share June 27, 2007 Ok just collected my stream this evening. the locally fitted sony single din hu had an aux input, so i'm good to go, hooked up my pda, mp3 and gps functions worked fine, volume loud and clear through car speakers. looks like i won't need to do any modifications, the aux in worked perfectly
Junwei87 Neutral Newbie July 1, 2007 Share July 1, 2007 Sorry to hijack this thread.. I'm new to this.. What is an aux input? Does it mean that I could connect my mp3 player in? If yes, what cable do I need? Advice needed~! Thanks!
