While street racing appears more exciting, it can also result in unnecessary damage and destruction.

A few days ago a highway (400) in Toronto was closed for 14 hours (both directions) because a street race resulted in an accident between 2 speeding cars and a truck.

Unfortunately the truck driver died when he tried to avoid the speeding cars.

the drivers of the speeding cars were injured slightly an arrested.

Crushing is a bit extreme IMHO. Its the drivers that need to change. There are similar laws in Aust. In Melb theres the 24hr (or was it 48hr) confiscation for a first time "hoon" offence (this incorporates more than just racing), 3 mths for the 2nd offence and permanently for the third via the courts.

For the last the vehicles are auctioned off and in the event that the auction amount is less than the loan, the previous owner will have to pay the rest of the loan, if higher the govt gets the $$$. In all the scenarios in addition to paying whatever traffic related or illegally modded vehicle fines, the driver has to pay the cost for the period the car is impounded too as well as towing costs.

our gahmen will strip the parts n swop for legal parts and sell it back to the owner [laugh]

or maybe just export the cars [sly]. crushing the cars sends a message but we are simply too pragmatic for such wastage [laugh]

of course, the LTA will continue doing the same old thing. at most increase effort n frequency [lipsrsealed][dead]

from the article it seems that the drivers committed 2 offenses:

illegal modifications and street racing.

Agree.

It can also gives too much power/authority over civilian.

Imagine this power/authority is being abused [sly]

So if some sum seng TP caught you with a broken light, used the excuse to pop your bonnet, then say your transmission is stolen!! [laugh] then send your car for crushing [dead] and after that tell you sorry it was a mistake and the authority will ensure that it will not happen again [laugh] just like the poor guy who was canned extra 3 times for nothing [shakehead]

it wasn't surprised at all.. over at LA where the streets are wide and empty in the sub-urban areas lots of cars are involved in street racing.. the ages mainly range from 16 to 24... i drive CRV over there so nobody bothers to ka-cau me... [laugh][laugh]
