Meecar Clutched May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Japanese Car I bought the very first Honda Accord when it was first launch and I remembered (if memory does not failed me)the speedometer has a maximum speed of 200+km/h and recently at Suntec City, out of curiosity I took a look at a Lexus LS430 parked next door and saw that the maximum speed was only 180km/h max on the speedometer. Is my eyes playing tricks or something I don't understand a 4000cc car versus a 1600cc car yet there is such a discrepancy in their maximum speed I have never tried going for the maximum speed in my Honda any intelligent explanation. ↡ Advertisement
Mysteria Neutral Newbie May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 it might be 180miles/hr
Watwheels Supersonic May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Yeah...should be 180mph instead of 180kph.
Turbonetics 2nd Gear May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 no,speedometer don't tell everything about a car. LS 430 can definitely go above 180km/hr.
Latioboy 1st Gear May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 I thought Lexus LS has been electronically limited to 180km/h?
Fitvip Supersonic May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Don't forget that many powerful cars have their speed electronically locked to much much lower! The full potential of the car cannot be realised! So, the dial does not reprent everything!
Alanswan Neutral Newbie May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 The Corolla I had in US had up to 180km/h diplayed on the speedo. I've had the needle gone to the end of the meter before... Slightly beyond the last marking.
Kwchan 1st Gear May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 (edited) The speedo of my van is up to 200km/h, which means it is more capable than Honda Accord & LS430? Anyway, hitting over 200km/h with a van is possible as it is designed to handle such speed. It is safer than you think and there are fellow drivers in other countries that manage to hit 220km/h and even beat a coupe in drag race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD1op6Yy6Cc Edited May 27, 2007 by Kwchan
macrosszero Turbocharged May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 (edited) When I was a little boy in Primary School taking the school bus to school, one of my friends was boasting how his uncle's car read up to 240 kilometres per hour, comparing to the school buses' ending at 140 kmh. Being the little kids that we were all so impressed that his uncle had a fast car......since the speedo reads 240, it MUST be able to go to 240, right??? It was only decades later that I realized that the speedometer numbers don't imply performance. Of course, JDM cars typically have a 180kph speedometer, along with the aforementioned electronic limiter, but when that is unlocked, some people would go and buy a replacement speedometer either to replace the existing one, or add on another one. Caravan 5th Gear May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Most jap cars are electronically limited to 180km/h. German cars are limited to 250km/h I think.
Nazaki Clutched May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Hehz, its not true, u need another meter to tell u wat's ur speed after u cleared ur meter.

Alanswan Neutral Newbie May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 Yeah... It had display in both km/h and mph... I figured it was because it's a Jap car. Anyway, I weren't complaining since it helped me with the conversion...
Meecar Clutched May 27, 2007 Author Share May 27, 2007 then why the need for such huge CC car therefore in theory a Honda Accord along the express highway can out run a Lexus LS in the long run true or false given the explanation by mcforumers

You must have seen wrongly. Probably like what others said, it could be 180 mph. Even my 1997 manual mazda speedo reads 220 and in stock condition with 14 inch rim 185 tyre it had gone to 190+ and could still go except no balls. If LS430 is limited to 180 kph, then it is embarrassing when overtaken by a 1.6L car because of its speed limiter.
Dumb 4th Gear May 27, 2007 Share May 27, 2007 For your info, my 1983 honda accord manual in stock condition max at 173 kph only even tho speed is 200+. Even when I floored the accelerator and the off air con, the car simply cannot move faster with 1 pax. Downhill can only reach 175 kph. So speedo doesn't say anything, unless you mod your car.
