Very confusing.

I want to retain my old car number after I sell it away, and put it on a new car. But the new car is still in Japan factory building . Meaning the old car will sell first and wait for new car to arrive.

1) Can I retain my old car number, and get a new number for the old car? How much to hold on to the old car plate and how long can I hold?

2) So the I can wait a few months later, when the new car comes, I can register it with the old number plate.

The best answer to all the various questions here.

1800 - CALL LTA

Seriously. Its easier and costs nothing but electricity & time.

(edited)

I did the same for current car, 2 years already.

Retain old number and pay $100 only.. That is new number not revealed, and transfer done in 3 days.

maybe they have revised their rate to $300

If your want to see your new number then decide to keep old number, that will be $2,600.

But Simon's case, it is special. becasue new car still far away.

first of all, if the old car is your mums and the new car is your own, there is no way to retain it. LTA's principle is that no. plate can only be retained by the same owner

you gotta xfer your mum's car to you just b4 dereg, then apply LTA to retain no, dereg the old car. you are allowed up to 1 yr to keep the old plate until your new car is registered.

Not really. You can appeal to LTA. Some have tried and succeeded.

LTA rules very dumb one.

I have retained my old plate and got a used car. As LTA says u can only retain and use numbers whom the car u already own.

So not in ur name u cannot get the number.

So how ppl "BUY" ur number?

I was recommended this method by LTA believe it or not:

-take ur car which u number u want to sell and transfer to the buyer, bear in mind this will be +1 transfer for ur car and u need to pay transfer fee

-then he will do number retain of ur car, a new number will then be issued to ur car, yes pay some admin money too

-then transfer the car with the randomly issused plate back to ur own name, another +1 transfer to ownership and pay transfer fee again!!!!

-then take the 1st number u retained and go LTA do number swap

Beside losing lots of money ur car will become +2 transfer!!!!!! SIAO!

So the solution, go get a scrap car....say 3k.....then do like the above....that way will not affect ur transfer. Since can cost little trans still applicable but less. I was told need to buy 1day imsaw too.

is this the procedure car plate dealers use? but to shift the wanted number onto the scrap car will cost 1.3k in the first place...

i was looking at transfer fees for some very old COE cars. like daihatsu charade, transfer fee is only $62, and the next transfer will even be cheaper.

so the whole procedues will cost around 1.3k + 2 x transaction fees (around $200?), not that ex if the number in question is a very good one.

but insurance etc paperwork how to settle if you own the car for 2 or 3 hours?

that is the prob. plus i think the trouble into insurance and then refund. is the troublesome and amt need to be counted into. unless not required insurance but i doubt so.

i understand there's such thing as a temporary transfer that's valid for 6 months. car dealers use that so there won't be the +1 transfer.

any way individuals can do that?

Insurance can buy 1day type. I was told some companies sell it.
