I used to drive a Kelisa. My wife's colleague said I drive a "Nasi Lemak".

Think the lowest priced pt A to B jap car is a used jap car. There seems to have more and more rather new(less than a year) cars on the market. Just make sure you get a good bargain out of it.

Have been following this post closely.

 

Re point made on Daihatsu, I agree wholeheartedly,which also led me to take on a Materia 1.5L auto from STS at mid 50Ks.

 

Very hardy car, and true that Toyota owns 100% of Daihatsu. STS fail to promote the brand well enough and again true that their showroom is shabby & in some showrooms (or it it all), non airconditioned. The brand comes across as an afterthought. But for those who reads up online on Daihatsu's reviews from UK / NZ / Sth Africa websites, u will realise the glowing appraisals that this brand has garnered.

 

Lancer & Sunny are great cars. Have sat in them b4 and sturdy feel. However, 55K versus hi 40Ks, amortized by prob average of 3-4 years holding period for a VVTi engine (in case of Materia abt 13-14km/L; expressway travelling, prob more; Materia's curb weight is only 1050kg, despite its "largish" size") is reasonable.

 

Used to swear by Honda (owned a Civic EK4 & Jazz) until I told myself I am broke paying up to Honda premium pricing, hence decided to stretch my dollar by getting a cheap & trustworthy Daihatsu.

IMHO...

For Manual - Cheapest and good and roomy - get Lancer (for auto - gearbox not so gd)

For Auto/Manual - Cheap and good and very roomy - get City (auto can play with 7speed somemore)

For Auto/Manual - Cheaper and good and but less spacious - get Vios

Depends on wat you want la.. Difficult for everyone to judge cos to each own will. Other makes didn't cross my mind as wat i have feedback especially for auto, other makes other than above not very FC friendly and also cos for new & budget car to me, means I have limitations in terms of $$$ so must choose a car which is good in FC. Save as much as possible ma.

If you are buying an auto, lancer cvt not known for fantastic fc. In fact, City IDSL does much better in terms of FC.

 

On the other hand, you are going to pay about 50k for a car, FC (of either sunny or lancer cvt) doesn't really make a significant impact on your monthly running cost, unless you drive a lot or the car you buy is a serious drinker. Check out the MCF fc chart.

 

Unless you are going for a jazz or city IDSL or even a hybrid, you can't really save much more on fuel.

 

Finally, if cost is that big an issue, you shouldn't be considering a car in the first place. Just an honest opinion. Buses and mrts are still cheaper than car. One year insurance and road tax can buy your oc and you a holiday too.

Threadstarter already specified he wants a Jap made car and must be cheap and auto. Only he did not specify the cc. So forget about vios, altis or city which are not Jap made. I think Latio also not Jap made.

 

Only lancer, sunny, daihatsu and madza are made in jap. But madza more ex and FC higher than the others.

Comes with lots of stickers plastered all over the car and equipped with the smallest possible .... sub 1 litre engine, but gives the loudest roar with its extra wide HKS replica exo. Car comes with evo spoiler thrown in, free tinted windows and full bodykit. Good resale and low depreciation.

1. FC . I used to monitor the FC very closely when I first owned car. I even prepared a spreadsheet and look at the consumption trend. After a while, I gave up, if want to enjoy driving, mustn't be too concern about FC (of course, within reasonable range). If really so FC concerned, you better buy a sub 1L car and stick to 80km/h at most.

 

Lol. I also did a spreadsheet, until I stopped completely. It was like a meaningless exercise. Besides, after my fc was a consistent 13 to 14km/l, the fuel bill was quite satisfactory.

Ya, he didn't state the cc, and he didn't said must be a sedan, so Subaru R2 should be the cheapest at the moment, it is a Jap made and it is auto. I am not here to say anything good or bad of this car, just to do an update on this thread as the title has stated.
