My CNG conversion

I'm sorry. No pics yet.

Here is the deal. My cylinder is 60L water capacity. I still got some boot space left. They didn't remove my spare tire and I can still use it.

CNG capacity is 10kg. I will monitor consumption. An earlier conversion involved a Corolla which used the same 10kg amount of gas. 200km range with heavy footed driving. Problem is my car is not a Toyota. unsure.gif

My kit is an OMVL sequential gas injector kit. Reasons for switching over to it are concerns for safety. My intake manifold is plastic. Any backfire and it might blow to pieces.

How does it work? When the engine cranks up, it will start on petrol. After operating temperature is reached, it will switch to gas. You can manually switch to gas by holding down the control button after starting. Tap the button again, switches to petrol. Start the car holding onto the control button, starts on gas immediately.

If it runs out of gas, it automatically switches to petrol.

When the car idles, it will use petrol. This helps in reducing engine temperatures. Another reason I like this setup is that this car is inherently petrol driven so using some petrol will enable lubrication over the seals and injectors keeping the combustion chamber clean. Gas as you all know is dry.

Due to my failure to communicate with the installer, the operation is now tuned to my old platinum plugs. Some hesitation is felt on hard acceleration. 2 weeks later I will retune with the new stock plugs gapped to 0.9mm.

How much for the conversion and how much time needed to set up the whole thing?

Carburetted car can install CNG. Cheaper at 2k but if your car is a hatch, space constraint. Maybe sacrifice boot space completely!

Conversion takes at least 4 days. 1 week max depending on whether they have the parts.

SGI kit from Melchers (OMVL from Italy) is 3.5k

Mixer kit (Galileo from Argentina) is 2k.

All inclusive of the cylinder but price might increase from what I heard. GST and all that going whack us hard in Jul.

Yes. Aveo. I wanted the cheaper mixer kit but the Aveo would not allow me. The plastic intake manifold might blow to pieces if there is a backfire with the cheaper kit.

For better control of gas mixing, the sequential gas injector kit was chosen. It is more expensive.

I can feel the difference when it switches. Tried it out today.

Car started in the morning. Drove out of the MSCP but it was still on petrol. Super smooth. Then when I turned at the first traffic light junction I encountered. The system switched after receiving data that the car can switch to gas. I hear a click, the car hesitated and then continued as per normal.

I can feel it slightly sluggish. There is constant hesitation below 1.5kRPM.

Push it hard and it goes away. Likes to be revved to remove the hesitation. Will go back with new ignition parts 2 weeks from now.

BTW, Melchers must be given permission to alter your car's VITAS after installation. LTA will know your car is extra special. I have the green diamond CNG decal on both my front and back of the car.

This is to facilitate how the SCDF should react when they see this car in an accident (siam far far away to JB laugh.gif).

The controller button has the LED display. Shows from left to right a single red dot and 5 green dots. All green dots lighted up = full CNG cylinder. Will reduce the dots from right to left until you have red which is = to around 10-20km worth.

Control button also shows 2 icons. "G" for gas and is orange on the bottom left. Red petrol pump icon on the right for petrol.

There is also another gauge in the engine bay next to the fill-in port. Exactly like a gas pressure gauge. Shows it in bar. Full tank is 200bar.

This is expensive. Last time when they first started, I emailed them to ask and they said they are still getting approval. But rough cost will be around 2K. Now it's 3.4K. [:(]

No. Because not subsidized in Malaysia. That is the main reason why petrol got the 3/4 rule in SG.

It is not to protect our petrol business here. If you go over to pump JB petrol, you are actually robbing Malaysians of their tax dollars.

In short 3/4 rule is made to protect Malaysians.
