Currently, we (me and my hubby) has 1 OPC car bought 1 mths back. I just got my license recently, and hope to drive to wk frm now on.

When we bought our OPC, we were thinking of topping-up after our Ceremony as alot of our cash are tie-up as deposit and only he is driving. Both of us work very close to home, 30min travelling time (trains+ bus+ alking) only.

Options

1) Top-up our OPC and drive as a normal car.

- car too big for me to park.. *sianz*

- car is manual ... *sianz*

- car has 5.2k COE..Is it worth topping-up ?

2) Buy another small car ( R2 , picanto , march ~40k)

- easier for me to park

- auto!!

BTW, anyone know if i buy the 2nd as a normal car, then convent it to a OPC.can i transfer the rebate amt as top-up for my 1st car to normal?

IMHO, key thing to consider is the additional cost that comes with a 2nd car and decide if its worth it. This will also means eating into your monthly savings and less spending power on other luxuries in life.

Weight the pros and cons, and more importantly, be happy with your decision [thumbsup]

if u making good $ and have loads of $ in the bank, then why not 2nd car? else should forget about cars in the first place. 30min just take bus lah!

the best and economic option: trains+ bus+ walking. [thumbsup]

2nd option: buy 2nd small car, better picanto, because you can't drive manual car, even if you convert you existing car to normal, you still can't drive. [thumbsup]

3rd option: convert you existing OPC car to normal, your hubby fetch you to/from work daily[:p]

guess TS prolly wants to drive daily since she just got her lessons.

one other thing to consider is traffic condition. it makes a hell of a difference driving in morning peak hours vs driving during off peaks hours. feeling is totally different. [sly]

Hi, based on your situation, one of the better options is to convert the OPC into a normal-use car and then have your hubby drive you to work before he goes to office. This is viable if you're both working in around the same area or if the direction of travel is roughly the same. Getting a second car is a financially heavy and long-term commitment and may affect your savings for future family use (kids, bigger home, etc).

My view of the fact that your car has 5.2k COE is that it is not a significant factor in deciding whether it is viable to be converted to a normal-use car. As for your worries that the car is too big for you to park or that it is manual can all be overcome with sufficient practice. I know of ladies who drive and park manual cars very well although they started off quite skeptical about being able to achieve that.

As for your last question, no, it is not possible to transfer the second car OPC rebate amount as top-up for the first car.

pardon me. Based on the scenario given, I would say, you and your husband fail to plan even for your first purchase.

If you are planning to have kids soon, I do not think it is a good idea to commit another car.

If you belongs to those desk bound job, I would suggest you keep your spare cash in hand instead of getting another car.

Buying a car is easy, but getting rid of it is difficult.

I am assuming the two of you are cash poor at this moment now. Hence forget about getting a 2nd car. I think many bros here will share with you the financial reasons but I share with you from a different point of view.

If you have one car, then perhaps both of you can spend more time together. Every morning, your hubby can drive you to work. You can chit chat with him during the journey. Or maybe have a quick breakfast in car while he drives. Then when you knock off, he can come fetch you if possible and you can chat in the car. Then go for dinner together and pay parking for just one car. If you tired, you can catch forty winks while he drives. When you want to go out for shopping, you can ask him to drive you there or accompany you. At least he will not say that you have your own car so you drive yourself there. Another thing is that when you have children next time, your 2nd car becomes a bit redundant because I assure you that both of you will spend most of the time in the same car with your kid. If you get your own car, you will go your way and he go his way and in the long run not beneficial to your relationship. You may start to take each other's mobility for granted.

Think about the intangibles. I think it far outweighs the financial reasons for not getting a car. Leave that cash for your kid or holidays. That money can be more well spent on other things rather than a 2nd car.

Just my 2cts. Nobody can stop you if you insist on buying a 2nd car.

THINK top up would be a better choice since your COE is only 5.2K. YOur 17K rebate would eat cleanly into your Parf and it actually means that the car got only little paper value when you sell it or export it.

well i would say it would be good to ask urself if you could afford the extra cost.

well we do have 2 cars.

bought the 2nd coz it seem like quite cheap 12k and can drive few more yrs.

paid cash but then after that still got quite a lot of things involve like parking, road tax, insurance, maintainces and all those. then very often at least twice a week one of the car will be left parking there.

i would say it may be better if we juz shared 1 car and i woke up earlier everyday to send her to work. no not need to come out with the extra $400-500 every month including the depreciation.

then seem like both car like under utilized.

moreover in the past, my gf would come over to my work place or i go fetch her back. i think there will b more time to be together. (ur case diff coz married)

i would choose choice 1 if i were u.

choice 1) convert opc to normal

if u dun choose choice 1 then how to drive the 1st car to work? unless u all work off peak hours.

if u choose

choice 2)get a new car.

okie great that u got a car to drive to work then wat do u all do with the first car? juz park at home. dun make much financial sense isnt it?

mite as well convert the car back and try to learn the manual. after 1 day of driving at a heavy vechicle car park with ur hubby. juz drive brake drive brake after 3 hrs i am sure u can drive a manual car as well.

then after u drive the first car. if u all find that its more convenient to get the 2nd car then get the 2nd normal car then. at least the first car wun be a OPC that is under utilised

and yah i "think"

can convert from opc to normal and vice versa.

Pardon me, TS meant she learn autocar right?

For class 3A licence to drive manual car, need to take lessons again and TP test for class 3 manual right? Otherwise it is an offence - driving without valid licence.

where do u stay and work? Hows ur journey to work like?

Since u juz got ur licence, i suppose u have very little road experience rite?

Are u able to cope with those rush hour traffic/congestion?
