How to Jump Start a Vehicle with a Dead Battery?

A dead battery can be a bummer. It can also be a dangerous job jump starting it. Some do it differently. This is how I do it.

Difficulty Level: average Time Required: 15 minutes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's How:

Make sure both batteries are the same voltage. Bring the running vehicle up to the front of the dead vehicle. They must not tough.

Make sure all emergency brakes are applied and all vehicles are in either park or neutral.

Cover the cell caps with a rag. Do not cover the terminals.

Put on some safety glasses.

Get your jumper cables. Make sure they are good ones with no frays anywhere.

Connect one red handle clamp of one end of the jumper cables to the positive side of the dead battery.

Connect the black handle clamp of the same end of the jumper cables to a good ground besides the negative side of the good battery. An alternator bracket usually works well.

Take the red handle clamp on the other end of the jumper cables and connect it to the positive side of the good battery.

Connect the remaining black handle clamp to the negative side of the good battery.

Start engine of starting vehicle.

Start dead vehicle.

If it does start right away rev up the running vehicle a little and just let it run for about ten minutes charging up the dead battery a little. Then try again.

If this doesn't work charge the dead battery with a battery charger. You should do this slowly over night.

If this doesn't work the dead battery probably needs to be replaced.

Tips:

Be careful not to cause a spark. This could make a battery blow up.

Frankly, if you have been following the developments of car electronic control systems since the early 80s, you will not recommend jump start using another car battery.

One thing to note when jump start a car with another car's battery.

Do not leave the 2 wires attached for too long because the dead battery will suck up the current from the good battery, ended up the other car need to jump start.

This is the advice I got from a car mechanic.

If I remember correctly (once did it a few years back), you need to put to free gear first. Then get someone to push your car, when it moves quite smoothly, engage 2nd gear immediately and turn on the ignition key. This should start the ride. The thing I did wrongly in the beginning is engage 1st gear which is a stupid mistake.

Have the ignition on first. When the car gains momentum, engage 2nd gear and release the clutch, and vroom it starts! Not recommended to push start cars with CAT!

Yes, It worked for me on my old van. But... But do remember this do not work for Auto car.

Also, Try not to do this on a new car because this voltage spike will kill the electronic in the car and bye bye warranty. [sweatdrop][shocked][wave]
