Theoldjaffa Hypersonic April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 maybe i should re-phrase, even at normal speeds of 80km/h on the highway with 2 lamp posts safety distance, during e-braking, it takes about 76m for the car to come to a complete stop, taking into account perception distance, reaction distance to be the same. the one with better tyres will provide a shorter braking distance and this small distance can prevent the car from crashing the one in front. ↡ Advertisement
Chemz Clutched April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 regardless of driving behaviour, a set of good tires will still always enable the car to come to a stop faster than those on stock oem tires like those found on normal entry level sedans. stock components will only remain as it is to serve their sole purpose of reasonable transportation(comfort, low noise and hence compromising on grip). no doubt it will be sufficient for normal day to day driving. Dumb 4th Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 Completely no doubt that a good set of tyres will stop the car faster. But how many really need better than the regular tyres on offer. Even with best tyres, they don't help at all if drivers are not attentive on roads or slow in reaction or do not see further than the car in front or the car behind. Worst some drivers (with good brakes?)brake without consideration of those behind.
Osiris 1st Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 I was on stock tyres for 2 yrs and it served me well. However, my pet peeve is wet performance of the stock tyres. Even driving at 30-40kmh in heavy downpour, aquaplanning is very pronounced when going through water ponding. Changed to a better tyre. On dry, I don't drive till I have a chance to test its limit. but on wet, I was really pleased with its water handling. goes through water ponding like it's not there. So there is definitely benefit to change to a better tyres even if you are not an adventurous driver. The compromise is more noise, slightly less comfy. Dumb 4th Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 Of course yours 2 years need to change. Even good tyres need to change before 2 years. Earlier with stock tyres, you dont experience acquaplaning rite?
Osiris 1st Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 I have to disagree with your argument, What the rest is saying is a good tyres does help somewhat to normal users vs stock tyres. As for bad drivers, what's the point of bringing them in the argument? There's no safety device that can help them. The only safety device is have their car impounded. But a good set of tyres does help inexperience driver. For e.g. With better wet grip, the inexperience driver can navigate through wet roads far better than if they are on stock. Osiris 1st Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 Quote However, my pet peeve is wet performance of the stock tyres. Even driving at 30-40kmh in heavy downpour, aquaplanning is very pronounced when going through water ponding. Extracted from my previous post. I DO experience aqua planning at relatively low speed. Thus my biaseness towards getting a tyre with better wet grip
Dumb 4th Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 Agree with you to some extent. But my point is that all regular tyres are good enough. Most cars, may be more than 90%, are on regular tyres. I have driven more than 20 years on regular tyres and have gone through all kinds of experience, including acquaplaning and 360 degree turn due to almost bald tyres. It's important to see more than the car in front and the car behind and react even before the front car would react to the car in front of him ...... Theoldjaffa Hypersonic April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 you are right lah stock tyres really do serve their purpose well for day to day normal driving. i guess wat we are trying to point out is, better tyres do make a difference in terms of passive safety. it doesn't mean stock tyres are no good. Kk88 Neutral Newbie April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 Quote Quote I am driving 06 Vios and using stock tires. What will the cost be around to change to better tires? Like V8RS or GR80 Sometimes it beats me that some want to change to "better tyres". Stock tyres or for that matter most tyres in the market should be good enough for average users. I have yet to hear lousy tyres causing accident in Sg by normal drivers. Rims may enhance the look but not tyres There is no real need to change tyres unless they are more than 2 years old or 40k whichever come first or the tyres are faulty. If you are one that used to speed, race, turn corners fast and zoom through heavy rain, then you should consider better tyres and change tyres at shorter intervals. Got...taxi tyres......all cannot make it...:(
Osiris 1st Gear April 10, 2007 Share April 10, 2007 (edited) Yes, of course regular tyres are good enough. Being situationally aware/alert is more important. It's prevention. Like I said, while stock tyres is good enough for me, but I still prefer something that give me more confidence in the wet. The gap of wet handling is very noticeable. I don't drive more aggressively in the wet because of better tyres, but I don't cringe anymore whenever I see water ponding. You don't have to be an aggressive driver to appreciate better tyres even if you don't exploit the tyres full potential Edited April 10, 2007 by Osiris

Boyboy 1st Gear April 16, 2007 Share April 16, 2007 between DECENT tyres and no ABS and lousy stock tyres (i say lousy cos some rides come with decent stock tyres . take my hankook centum for e.g. ) with ABS, i'll take the decent tyre, no ABS combi anyday.. but for normal driving, it is not a need to have expensive tyres. slow down appropriately (sometimes by a lot!) when it rains and keep distance.. etc etc. i could say the same of ABS, since there is such a thing as cadence braking
