BBC motoring host slams Perodua Kelisa But M'sian minister says they never get complaints

April 06, 2007 Print Ready Email Article

IT'S the worst car in the world.

That was the claim Malaysia had to defend after British motoring critic and BBC presenter Jeremy Clarkson put that label on the the Perodua Kelisa, which is made by national carmaker Perodua.

Mr Abdul Raman Suliman, deputy minister in the prime minister's department, said the British distributor of Perodua's mini five-door Kelisa had never received complaints, Bernama reported.

'From 2001 to 2007, Perodua has exported more than 2,400 units of Kelisa to the UK and the sole Perodua distributor there had not received any negative complaints as made by JeremyClarkson,' MrAbdul Raman was quoted as telling lawmakers in parliament concerned over the comments.

He also accused MrClarkson of making the criticisms to boost sales of his magazine and said they were only his personal opinion.

He also said that MrClarkson was like a football commentator who cannot play football, reported BBC News.

Bernama quoted MrClarkson as saying last year that the Kelisa 'is without doubt the worst car, not just in its category, but in the world'.

Mr Clarkson, a host on the BBC's Top Gear motoring show with a magazine of the same name, has attacked the Kelisa hatchback several times.

In a February 2004 article in the British Sunday Times, he described the Kelisa as 'a car built in a jungle clearing by people who go to work in shoes made from leaves', according to the newspaper's website.

He also released a DVD of car reviews in 2005 in which he bashes the Kelisa with a sledgehammer and then blows it up with dynamite.

Perodua is Malaysia's second national carmaker and began operations in 1995 as a producer of small and fuel-efficient compact models. - AFP.

It could be true.

I've got a really close friend who died from a crash in his Kelisa in Malaysia.

He could have survived if the car was some other car, the Kelisa is wrecked.

Sighz..

I like this line:-

It must be be a feat not to have a single grouse about a car.

This confirms that China made Chery QQ is still a better made car than the Perodua Kelisa.

I have yet to see Jeremy slam the QQ.

Agree. Actually, in one Top Gear episode....they (I think it was James and Hamster)were saying that the Kelisa is not a bad car for the price. They commented it drives pretty much like the original mini....which is good.
