cuz i have a fren who works for trans euro cars

n he says the cayman is a very problamatic car

there are loud vibration noises

Hi Guitar77, the rich and those who want to be noticed will get the Porsche Cayman. Though the Cayman is a 2-seater whereas the BMW335 is 4-seater, those who own the Cayman will usually have a 2nd car.

 

The Cayman has 2 models. Cayman(A) costs S$250,888 and Cayman (S)A costs S$290,000. The BMW 335 Coupe(A) costs S$238,800.

 

If you ask me, I will go for the Porsche Cayman.

i know what porsche is best for. it's the best rear engined sports car!

 

have to give a lot of credit to them actually. they made a car with the engine on the wrong end to handle superbly.

 

it showed flaws in the beginning, but with the help of electronics now, their handling is almost flawless.

 

but mid engine still the way to go, actually the cayman could've been better. but if so, 911s will be collecting dust in the showrooms liao. what a pity.

should'nt be a problem if getting a 250 to 300k sports car.

 

what disappoints me is some dealers for mainstream cars are already omitting manual models liao... eg. the mini. all AUTO! where's the joy of driving one now?

 

luckily alfa dealers still offer manual.

Yes, that's the one. It's not with me yet, it will probably come in Aug/Sept.

 

The reason why I chose the 2.7 was half a budgetary reason, and the other half, I keep on reading in various publications like GT Porsche (Chris Harris) and Motor Trend columnist Antoine Deveraux that the 2.7 was all that they needed, and the rev happy engine (lighter pistons) and the small 17" wheels gave better chassis compliance.

 

Even with the cayman S one cannot win against the STI, Evo or 350Z anyway, and I didn't buy the car for traffic light GP.

 

To sum it all, I chose the Cayman after testing the 335, Z4 3.0SI coupe, Audi TT2 coupe 2.0 FWD DSG, 630, and I found that nothing beat the Cayman in the sheer driving pleasure it gave me, and also the sound of the exhaust and the intake was just incredible.

 

The Z4 Coupe 3.0SI came closest (but was quite far away) and the reason why I didn't choose it was because it had no real soul, but it sure is a looker. It drove excellently, but never gave me the feel and involvement that the Cayman did.

 

The 335 was far away in the driving pleasure department. It was horrendously frighteningly powerful for a car of its class, and will surely win in any traffic light GP which you will encounter in Singapore, but it had really no match for the Cayman in driver involvement.

 

If you boss doesn't LOVE driving, just LIKES it, go buy the 335 - it is the world's best car for ease of driving and simple driving experience and the feeling of power. It will bring you to Thailand or Penang quickly, safely and effortlessly. If he LOVES driving, just go for the Cayman. Anything else is not as worth as the Cayman.

 

By the way, ROAD PRESENCE and IMPRESSIVE was one thing which made me want a BMW. I don't like to be gawked at and envied and snide remarks made, so a Porker is one of the cheapest ways to get people to hate you. But my love of driving prevailed and I got the Porker. I chose WHITE because I did not want to attract too much attention, otherwise I'd have chosen Yellow or Red. Black - I can't take the crazy maintenance involved.

 

With a BMW Z4 or 335, the HATE quotient is not so great.

Some would like the tiptronic but not me. If I took the expense and trouble to buy a Porsche, it should not have automated transmission whether dual clutch automated manual (DSG) or slushbox or robotized manual. If i wanted any automated, the car would be a 335.

 

I would never compromise on the transmision department, if I did, I would compromise more - eg. 4 seats, 4 doors, big boot, steering number, etc.

The Hamster might be right. Even without the Cayman, I would never consider the 911 however much money I have. For the money of a Carrera, I would have considered another car. Perhaps a 2nd hand Ferrari with a mid engine. Perhaps a BMW M Roadster. Or something.

 

The 911 must be driven with good care, slow in fast out, max out the rear weight bias for traction. This is FAST in real life, but NOT ENJOYABLE. It does not have `chuckability'. You can't chuck the car, you can't have the confidence that a properly set up mid engine gives you. Yes, in my life I have driven 911 several times, once at length (993 Carrera). you never get the feeling that the car is on rails.

 

I am not buying into the Porsche tradition, I am buying a car to drive with enjoyment. I don't give a flying f__k that the car is a Nissan. In fact, I'd be happier if the Cayman were Nissan or Honda branded, that way I won't attract so much attention both from the cops or public.

 

Richard Hammond, like many English journalists, love the tradition of cars. I do too, I follow histories of cars very closely. But the difference between me and them, is that I don't have to write these histories for a living. Therefore, I don't have to mix up my love for driving and the history of marques. They are different subjects to me. Totally different. But if journalists treated them as different subjects, all car magazine reviews would only take a quarter of a page. :)
