Albeniz Turbocharged March 18, 2007 Share March 18, 2007 Hi all, I am driving a manual car. Out of about 20 times I engage the 1st gear (under normal start-stop condition), there will be once where it refuses to engage properly, producing a "Krooong" sound. A repeat attempt is likely to be alright. I suspect my clutch might be wearing out and is due for a change. Besides clutch, do you think there is a problem with other components? I am think of servicing at Comfort Automotive Singapore (CAS) at Sungei Kadut (Yew Tew)area. How is their workmanship? Thanks. ↡ Advertisement

Decibel Neutral Newbie March 18, 2007 Share March 18, 2007 That is definitely one possiblity. Old gearboxes can develop such problems due to wear and tear. Do you hear crunching when you change gears when stationary/driving? Another possibility is that your clutch is not disengaging properly but seeing as you only have problems engaging first gear, I don't think this is the problems unless you have other clutch wear symptoms like slippage. Decibel Neutral Newbie March 18, 2007 Share March 18, 2007 Interesting that a relatively new gearbox could develop a problem like that. Did you find out how it occured? Had you been abusing ur g/box?
Elfenstar 3rd Gear March 19, 2007 Share March 19, 2007 It sounds like a worn syncro issue. If your clutch is fine try swapping to a 50% Redline lightweight shockproof and 50% redline MT80 oils. It should help quite a fair bit. If your clutch isnt fine, do it both at the same time coz those oils arent exactly the cheapest around. Another thing you could do is try revving the car slightly, take your foot off the accelerator and while the engine starts to slow gently slot the gear in. I am think of servicing at Comfort Automotive Singapore (CAS) at Sungei Kadut (Yew Tew)area. How is their workmanship? Thanks. I have noticed that when the car is moving at certain speed, it is difficult to engage the 1st gear. Must wait till its almost stopping then can engage the first gear.... The technic "double-clutch" will help it engage easier, meaning first step fully your clutch and release the clutch, and second time stepping on the clutch then this time engage the gear. It should be easier to engaue using this method.
Mivec9 1st Gear March 19, 2007 Share March 19, 2007 i have this problem just before i got my clutch changed...i believe it is one part of the clutch system worn off but then as i wanted to ensure everything is in good order, i changed the whole clutch. Skunk Clutched March 19, 2007 Share March 19, 2007 normal lah for Nissan Presea....the gearing seems very low, so u gotta wait until car almost stop then engage 1st gear. Sometimes, i can even move off in 2nd gear! try not to "kroog" it too often, wait spoil the gear synchomesh....so just drive as per my advice. No need to change anything wan lah! Hungryforcar 1st Gear March 20, 2007 Share March 20, 2007 it could be clutch cable wear and tear too, i just changed my clutch, the problem i had was when engaging to higher gear there was drag on the power.
Newsunny Neutral Newbie March 20, 2007 Share March 20, 2007 Redline lightweight is GL-5, old nissan cannot use GL-5 cos it will corrode brass synchonizer, only GL-4. I use a 50/50 mixture of redline MTL/MT-90 (both GL-4), shifting has improved significantly from the stuff that authorised dealer put in at 40k km servicing. There was no problem with the factory-fill gear oil. But after changing to dealer gear oil at 40k km servicing, shifting notchy and car must come to almost stop before can engage 1st gear. Change to redline and it was back to original, can engage 1st gear up to 10-15kph.
Hungryforcar 1st Gear March 20, 2007 Share March 20, 2007 It is true that if i leave the clutch remind unfixed, one day i will not able to enage the gear? i have such fear when i think of it so i quickly replaced the part.
Newsunny Neutral Newbie March 20, 2007 Share March 20, 2007 I'm no expert, but usually clutch do not affect engaging of the gears unless it's stuck or something. The synchronizers in the gearbox do the engaging, so if they are worn or wrong gear oil is used, then might have problem engaging. If there is loss of power, probably your clutch is worn and it's slipping, so engine power is not fully transmitted to the axles. Worn clutch better change. ↡ Advertisement
