The hokkien mee there is nothing to crow about. The stall, Nam Sing, inside the Simon Rd market (long demolished) is very much better. Nam Sing, now at Old Airport Rd hawker centre, together with the one at the basement of Beach Rd hawker centre (building selling army products) were rated the best two in Singapore by a panel of New Paper food journalists a few years back.

The market in the second picture was the Lim Tua Tow Rd market which was demolished years ago.

This place looks interesting. I definitely have passed there a few times as a kid. But I can't recall anything about this place, now known as ????

"If I am not wrong, this is where Kallang Gas Works use to stand."

I think you are right. On the right of the picture at the background, stands Hajjah Fatimah mosque, with its golden onion dome, at Beach Rd.

NewBridgeRd.jpg

New Bridge Rd towards direction of Hill St. Wayang St with the original Thong Chai Free Clinic is on the right. At the junction (see "Pilot" advert) is the junction of New Market Rd on the left and South Canal Rd on the right. And, yes, policemen wore shorts in the picture. [laugh][laugh]
