ABS, is this a necessity?

My car doesnt comes with ABS. But i must say if you drive over puddles at high speed, it is rather dangerous without ABS. So typically i will avoid right most lane during heavy rain on expressways.

u mean losing control when going over water ponding on e way?

That one is hydroplaning. ABS does not help when car hydroplanes.

If your car has ABS, you should really try to activate it.

This is ensure that you know the feeling of when ABS kicks in. It is well-documented overseas that ABS has caused death in cases. This is because drivers who have never activated ABS before "panic" when ABS kicks in. They release the brakes, and crash.

Main aim is to prevent car from swaying and spinning by preventing wheel lock, if i remember my engineering books correct.

That means it should be very useful when the TIME comes to use it.

I hv heard of some car owners that says they hv nvr activated their ABS in their lifetime of driving b4. Some says its only for drivers who feels insecure in wet weathers. Some activated theirs once b4 and says after that hv to go for chks.... is this true?

So I am anticipating whether to just go 4 a car without ABS.

Any Bro/Sis here have activated his/her ABS b4? Do you think this is necessary features for me who is self-proclaim safe driver who don't speed and don't tailgate?

The car w/o ABS is a manual car... [gossip]

If one drive with alert mind and look around with good defensive driving, no hi-speed cornering, not following too close in rainy days, keeping safe distance etc. There is no need ABS, EDB all the crabs.

Just like air bag -- if one is going to crash the wall w/o apply brake at speed. U tink the bag can save ur life ?

Safety features is just a premium provided for added safety. But driver still need to decide to drive to home or drive to hell

No pilot want to exercise emergency landing no matter how many time they have train and familiar with the procedure.

If a driver need to hard brake/emergency brake so often, must be something wrong with driving attitute.

Just watched an episode of Fifth Gear which featured testing of car ABS, traction control and ESP.

ABS - enables ur wheels to NOT lock/skid during braking.

on normal (non-loose) surfaces, shortens braking distances.

Traction control - enables ur wheels not to lock during movement on slippery surfaces.

eg. when going up a very slippery slope, with traction control off, car will skid backwards no matter how u try to manually control it.

with traction control on, wheels will not skid and will always have traction, thus enabling the car to go up properly.

ESP - computer will automatically control/brake individual wheels to enable traction and to ensure care stability. very useful in emergency steering.

Tiff Needle had to emergency steer around 2 obstacles at speeds of around 70mph.

with ESP off, sideslam into a (foam) wall.

with ESP on, car can be controlled and steered around obstacles.

pray u'll never need them but all these are things that may mean the difference between life n death in an emergency situation.

Anyone with information on the difference safety aspect of a 4-channel vs a 3-channel ABS system? Can a 4-channel ABS stop car shorter distance, or less likely to skid in a salome situation compared to a 3-channel car?

In theory, 4-channel ABS is better as individual wheels are locked/released to prevent skids.

The 3-channel ABS, has both the rear wheels locked/unlocked in a single channel.

Also does rear wheel drum brakes able to response as well as disc type in a ABS situation? Was thinking about the Celica sport car thread.

I experienced the benefit of ABS while swerving my car on a rainy day. I guess w/o abs, my humble ride would have lost control and hit onto the road barricade. So insist on ABS in your rides

Should have bah. That time when my dad was buying his Ssangyong Musso 1 or 2 years back. The base model (manual transmission) didn't come with ABS which is why i convinced my dad to get the auto one instead since that one does come with ABS. You lose some fuel economy with the transmission but i think the ABS is an important safety feature. To me it's a question of "Can you afford NOT to have it?" rather than "Can you afford to have it?".

Ehh.... drum brakes not necessarily no good or less responsive. There are plenty of cars with rear drums. Its whether the rear drums gives sufficient braking power to the car and the engine power output.

Obviously, if you have 200++ bhp in a 1 to 1.4tonne chasis, drum brakes may not suffice. So long as you dun have a mighty snail under the bonnet, drum brakes really do a good job for smaller cc cars.

Lets put it this way. Manufacturers wouldn't give u rear drums knowing that can't stop the car safely. [idea] But, if you are going to be pushing the limits of the car all the time, no car is a safe car. [laugh]
