Wish to add on your wonderful post. Take note the TTS language can be downloaded. You can have Jap, French, German, Cantonese, Chinese, British English or American English. However when it reads out our local street names, sometimes it sounds very funny. I usually turn the TTS off. So it ends up telling me to turn left in 300m without the street name. This I think is enough for me because many a times, I still rely on my eyes to watch out for the road signs. But TTS is cool! [thumbsup]

Hi,

So you are using a nuvi 300 which came without TTS and you managed to download a TTS language to it and got TTS on it. Just that you didn't like TTS, so turned it off. That's great and what I am looking for because initially, I thought that if a model does not come with TTS, then you cannot just download the TTS language to it to suddenly have TTS on your set.

Can you confirm whether on your nuvi 300, the TTS works with the Garmin maps AND the Malsingmaps?

Also, if I don't mind the bulkiness of a streetpilot, which is the cheapest streetpilot model with TTS?

Thanks.

My nuvi300 comes with TTS already. I did not download any additional software. I mean you can download additional languages for the TTS for Garmin website. For streetpilot series, I am not very familiar. You may want to check out their website for more info.

The TTS works with both original Garmin map and malsing maps.

i'm wondering if the free maps would be as nice as the original ones or simply just black lines on white background.

I tested out the malsing map version and found out it is similar to the original one frm garmin! So i went back to perfect watch and returned them the original map and got the $200 refunded..

I recommend the map frm malsingmap too.. very detailed, got most of the building name in sg..

hi,

just be careful if you are using in the car. i have heard some saying that the car film sometimes block out the gps signals (need to verify). then again my car film didn't.....could mean crappy quality [laugh][laugh]

me (gps newbie) using dopod d810 with mapking malsing gps system.....cheap and performance is good(no lag, real-time). signals won't be as strong as those dedicated ones but i do get cold startup timing at about 1 to 2 mins depending on where you are. if yr last coordinates is the same as wen u restarted the gps system, detection is below 1 min. just dun bother trying to get a signal in your hse ( as many users have tried it)...it doesn't work like this. this all in one device is suited for those who are occasionally lost and need some orientation, definitely not hardcore. mine's a phone, pda, gaming machine, portable movie viewer, camera, gps ......

but hor, if one spoilt all spoilt.....

So more precise road mappings and directions, it is still better to get a dedicated GPS applicance/device? Actually what are the trade-offs of using GPS phone? Thanks.
