Thermodynamics Neutral Newbie February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 I recommend a Garmin Nuvi 300. Priced around $800+. Comes with Text-to-Speech (TTS) function that reads out street names. Bundled with Garmin SG/JB map on SD card. Comes with windscreen suction mount and quick release catch for GPSr. You can get it from Perfect Watch at SLS 1st floor. Look for Uncle Yan. If you want a BT function, then go for Nuvi 310. It allows you to make and answer calls on your GPSr. The voice will be played via the GPSr speakers and you can press the touch screen buttons to make calls. Pretty neat. It costs additional $50 I think. This two models come with SiRF III chipset that acquires satellite fast. You can check out www.garmin.com for more info. After you get these items, buy an additional SD card and join the malsingmaps community at www.malsingmaps.com. There are maps much better than the original Garmin maps free for download in this forum. This community is supported by mapping enthusiasts. IMHO, if all you need is a car navigation device, no point splurging on top of the end model. In fact, it is the basic ones that offer the most stable platform for use. Take heed. New and expensive is not equivalent to better.
Thermodynamics Neutral Newbie February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 No installation required. The kit comes with a windscreen suction mount and cigarette lighter charger cable to power your GPSr. The GPSr also has an internal battery that can be charged via USB cable using your laptop/PC or cigar ligher charger. It can last as long as a drive up north to KL and back with three quarters of battery power left.
Route88 2nd Gear February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 How to update maps
Thermodynamics Neutral Newbie February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 The maps can be downloaded from the forum. They are updated very frequently because it is done by a huge group of enthusiasts in SG and MY. The spirit of sharing and bonding in this community is commendable. After download, transfer maps to your SD card in GPSr via USB cable. Details of how to do it can be found in their web page. Explore.

Sgnick 1st Gear February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 I just bought Garmin Nuvi 300 from Perfect Watch at SLS. I bought without official Garmin maps because it's cheaper, and also because I prefer to use the free SG/MY maps from malsingmaps.com Pricing from Perfect Watch is: Nuvi 300 with Garmin's own SG/MY maps = $890 (inc GST) Nuvi 300 without Garmin's own SG/MY maps = $690 (inc GST) As mentioned by others, Nuvi 300 from PW have TTS function, which can say out street names. Nuvi 300 without Garmin's own SG/MY maps and also without TTS (take note!), sold at STS Communication at SLS for $572. Please note that no TTS does not mean the GPS no sound, the GPS will still speak "Turn Left 300m, turn right, etc", just that without TTS the GPS won't say out the street name like "Turn left into Tampines Ave 5" Nuvi 310 Have bluetooth to handphone function, but NO TTS! Nuvi 360 Have TTS AND bluetooth plus Europe maps So up to you to decide which feature u need and which model to buy. Enjoy your GPS
Thermodynamics Neutral Newbie February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 I suggest you surf the forum first. www.malsingmaps.com It is always wise to find out more yourself then to hear from someone else. You only heard from me alone. Check out the forum and reviews there. In fact there is are more than one place you can get your GPSr from. Some other dealers offer cheaper price but with no maps bundled (to me it does not matter because malsing maps are way better).
Thermodynamics Neutral Newbie February 9, 2007 Share February 9, 2007 Wish to add on your wonderful post. Take note the TTS language can be downloaded. You can have Jap, French, German, Cantonese, Chinese, British English or American English. However when it reads out our local street names, sometimes it sounds very funny. I usually turn the TTS off. So it ends up telling me to turn left in 300m without the street name. This I think is enough for me because many a times, I still rely on my eyes to watch out for the road signs. But TTS is cool!
