Hi! there, TorqueLover,

I'd think that it's the 750 Series Alfa twincam engine, as used in my car.

Here's the write-up of the engine when it first came out:

The engine was a technical marvel. While it retained the typical (for Alfa) twin overhead cams and aluminium head, the block was also aluminium and utilized the wet sleeve design.

The upper part of the block is essentially an open box. Into the box are installed the cylinders that slide into machined receivers in the floor of the "box". The lower portion of the block features five deeply webbed main bearings and a counterweighted crankshaft.

The advantages of the wet sleeve design are twofold. First, it allows the cylinders to be fully surrounded by coolant. Alfa Romeo intended this engine to have very high horsepower to displacement relationship, and heat dissipation was a concern. Second, at overhaul time the cylinders can be replaced independent of the pistons, and the block can be rebuilt an indefinite amount of times as the damaged or worn cylinders can just be thrown away...

The result is an engine that makes a tremendous amount of power for its size, and is as unbreakable and as satisfying engine as you will experience... Every detail must be just so, and when it is the car is remarkably reliable and faithful. One little thing out of place can be a nightmare.

In the Jap segment,

If you consider a turbo-charged engine. I would say the EJ20 WRX engine is definitely one of the finest for the last 10years. It has proven reliability and the engine is definitely strong, being able to withstand the 'mod' and abuse by alot of users.

It produces excellent driving characteristics especially the latter ones. For such a compact 2L turbo-charged engine, it produces 218HP, 290Nm. I would say it definitely one of the engine that the JAP can be proud of.

Another 2L engine that I can think of is the HONDA VTEC engine, be it 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, 3.0 or 3.2L It definitely a Gem!!!

In the continental segment,

Not so much experiences..but

I would say the Alfa 156 2L engine would definitely be up there.

The BMW 320i 6cyl block is not too bad either.

"I see..."

Hi! there, Saaber,

That's why when it comes to Alfa Romeo, everyone's eyes (ta stamps).

BTW, the write -up was for the first mass-produced Alfa twin-cam engined car used in a lottery, where the first prize was, 24 units Alfa 1900 Giulietta in 1954.

Hi! there, WRXBlue,

I hope you're right, if it doesn't follow the AR146ts engine. As I haven't seen the internals of the AR156 engine. Last week, I saw the AR146ts engine, which, to me is a disappointment, as it don't use the Alfa twincam design.

Worse, is the positioning of the TwinSpark cyl head.

Hi! there, Saaber,

Here's the link to the history of Alfa Romeo.

http://www.team.net/www/ktud/alfatoc.html

This seems like a very good site.

As of 1954, Alfas became affordable for race teams on a low budget, as it's practically in race-tune, right out of the box. Alfa twincam engines are used in all forms of races, road, rally, power-boat, hill-climbs, etc. Only thing it didn't do is fly an aeroplane.

Factory run Alfa raceteams have always win their respective championship. Making it the winningest Manufacturer till today.

As demonstrated by the Alfa Giulia GTA since 1966, and Giulia GTam from 1970.

So, I've got the best affordable production Alfa, with the suspension system from the 1st World Championship winning, Alfetta Tipo 158, and the twinspark twincam engine from the Giulia GTA.

It's rather interesting that after hearing all the comments on good 2 litres engines, seems like not a single soul has commented on the Mitsubishi Evolution series engines (aka 4G63).

From the results collected, seems like our folks love (not in order)

1. Alfa (after my test drive on the 156, can't seem to forget the car)

2. Honda

3. EJ20 - WRX (personally I think nothing beats the roar from the boxer engine [sunny] )

Agree with WRXblue that the EJ20 is a gem [rolleyes]. Personally, I love Turbo charged cars than NA. More driveable as the max torque comes at a very low rev range.

When I see my bro-in-law in his Civic, always revving his engine to extract every bit of juice. Can be enjoyable at first but gets a bit tiring after a while. I will be killed by all type R fans man [lipsrsealed]
