Thinking it's safe to drill your disc brake rotors? Mechanic assured that it won't crack? This Kia lover got his front rotors drilled, and the disc cracked!

Evidence follows...

Actually was reading abt it not too long ago. In fact, was toying the same idea too [sweatdrop]

The Brembo cross drilled rotors actually has this self renewing and anti-crack design ..

Too cheam to explain (not as if I understand it totally) ...

Do read up their website for more details...

Any workshop does slotting of the rotors? Is it actually save to drill "halfway" or slot "halfway"?

shakehead.gif DO NOT touch the rotor, it is NOT SAVE thumbsdown.gif. This is a dangerous idea. Look for aftermarket cross drill/slot rotor & caliper. May need retrofit to fit.

Cheers..scholar.gif

Hmm.. might have to visit Angie one of these days, my bumper paint has started to crack mildly! 2 yrs back I asked C&C to re-align the front bumper, but they ended up scratching it. They resprayed certain parts FOC, and now obviously the paint is deteriorating!

Angie does spray pant right?

Have you tried BVO automotive.. they are brake specialise.

I think I have seen a KIA with slotted brakes at their workshop..

It is at Blk 15 Sin Ming.. next to Angie [gorgeous][inlove]

Drilled discs allows more effective cooling, and is more suited for race conditions. Overheated discs can cause the fluid to get too hot, hence brake fading.

Was wandering, how much benefit you get compared to not drilling the disc at all.

Yeah [nod] there should be no comprimise for safety. After 2 yrs and 91000 my current rotors looks perfectly ok, looks only. Can they actually last the car's lifetime?

I would source for some better rotors when it's time to replace the current ones!

If you must have x-drilled/slotted discs, get new ones. It's not a very nice thought that the brake fails when you need it most! [sweatdrop]

Cheers!

I'm surprised quite a number of us are interested to get cross-drilled! But drilled disc for your car would be much easier to get in the market, compared to mine! [blush]

I'm not sure if normal workshops are willing to retro-fit brakes for other cars to mine! [nosebleed]

That Kia lover is probably a young American, anyway he claimed the rotors cracked while he was driving too hard. I'll dig out the link to his page on the forum.

He can choose not to value his life, but he should spare a thought for the others!

Guess for normal driver like me, normal disc is more than sufficient.

Ya overheated disc and high temp can cause brake fluid to boil causing total brake failure.

Angie does

You quote

"Angie does spray pant right?"

Nope.. she won't spray your pant.. But she does spray paint.

91000 in 2 years?! Where you drive to, man? [sweatdrop] The rotor should always look OK, unless it's warped. Just check and see the amount of scalloping at the edge of the rotor. Deep scalloping means a well worn disc.

You may actually be pleasantly surprised that some slotted rotors are not much more expensive compared to stock.

Cheers!

You'll actually find x-drilled/slotted rotors useful on trips down Genting! [sly][laugh][laugh][laugh]

The last time I went there, on the way down, a SG-registered Civic crashed onto the central divider on the last left hand corner before reaching Karak! [shakehead]

Cheers!
