May I know what car are you driving? Mine is mineral oil only for the first 1k. I'm already on 5W40 after the first servicing. I am also not experiencing better fuel mileage yet but maybe it takes a while. Let's compare notes and see how it goes for a while.

Actual run in of modern engine probably takes place within the first hundred plus km. After that, run-in is for the driver's psychology as he/she learns more of the vehicle in a moderate way. sly.gif

Mine is still hovering around 11km/l even perhaps 10km/l. I have never been a heavy footer so I will observe again to see whether if the situation improves with time.

Neutral Newbie

Has anyone done the maths to confirm that synthetic can really reduce fuel consumption cost?

Like mineral 4L=$30.

Synthetic oil 4L= $80.

Difference is $50.

Oil change every 10,000km.

Fule cost per liter = $1.61

Assuming after using synthetic oil, the fuel efficiency can increase from original fulltank 12km per liters to new 13km per liters

Original fuel cost = (10000/12) *1.61 = S$1341.7

New fuel cost = (10000/13) *1.61 = S$1238.5

Total saved = S$103.2

Net saving is S$103.2 - $50 = S$53.2 Yeah Hurray??

The above calculation assumes that the car engine suddenly become fuel efficient from 12km/l to 13km/l after changing synthetic oil.....Can this large efficiency jump be even possible due to synthetic???? You tell me!

1000km is not just for engine, for your tyres, brakes and suspension too. Modern engine run in really no need so long. In fact i think most manuals nowadays did not specify run in for engine, i.e. keep within 4k rpm, vary engine speed etc instructions.

it will take some time for ur engine to get accustomed to the new oil.

5w40 has no fuel saving properties. since your car is new, next time change to a 5w30 or 0w30 oil, it will help improve your FC. many guys raided giant to buy tons of mobil one 5w30 last month. w20 oil is even better but risky as it might not provide an adequate seal for your car. i wont risk it unless someone i know driving my model has used it without problem [nod]

yes, toyota genuine synthetic and some lousy brand like cxx xxxe out 5w30 but it is actually mineral. if it's cheap, highly likely it is not fully synthetic.

[:p]

shell ultra synthetic is 5w40. it;s a good oil that will protect your engine but wont help your FC.

IMHO, mobil one is the best in terms of value for money. as esso and mobil have merged, it may be soon when we dont see any more mobil one !
