SUV hits divider, lands on Merc

All three in Merc die, SUV driver in intensive care

January 09, 2007

BUSINESSMAN Yap Fook Cheng loved fish and he regularly visited a fishing village near Taiping.

The 4WD that flipped over.

Yesterday morning, he took his sister, Ms Yap Ah Kwai, 69, and a friend, Mr Low Ah Ha, along to buy fish.

But as they were returning to Ipoh along the North-South Highway, tragedy struck.

A four-wheel drive SUV coming from the opposite directon lost control, jumped the concrete divider and landed on top of the Mercedes driven by Mr Yap.

All three occupants of the Mercedes died on the spot in the 10 am crash. The roof of the Mercedes was flattened in the impact and the bodies of the three had to be extricated by firemen.

Kuala Kangsar police Supt Zakaria Pagan told The Star that Mr Yap had been on his way back to Ipoh while the SUV had been going in the opposite direction, heading north. An icebox containing fish was found in the boot of Mr Yap's car when firemen arrived to extricate their bodies from the wreckage, he said.

'LOST CONTROL'

'The driver of the four-wheel drive was believed to have lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the concrete divider of the expressway before landing on top of the oncoming car,' he told reporters.

Rescue workers trying to get someone out of the back seat of the Merc.

'The road was probably slippery as it had just rained.'

Mr Yap, 52, was driving while his sister had been seated at the back. His friend, a 59-year-old retired postal officer, had been seated in front.

Mr Mohd Ibrahim Mohd Ali, whose car was behind Mr Yap's car when the crash took place, said he was lucky to have braked in time.

'I was shocked to see the 4WD coming at us from the other side of the highway. Everything happened so fast.

'I was shocked to see the vehicle crashing into the car in front of me,' he told the New Straits Times.

Mr Ibrahim said he alerted the police and the fire force before stepping out of his car to attend to the SUV driver, Mr Wong Peang Chu, 51, from Kuala Lumpur.

Mr Wong had been travelling alone in his Nissan X-Trail.

He suffered head and neck injuries and was rushed to the Ipoh Hospital, where he is in the intensive care unit.

Mr Ibrahim said he and his wife were sending their teenage son to Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam when the accident happened. [sweatdrop]

i tot those from opposite traffic that must be careful whenever see an X-Trail.. tongue.gif

anyway, for a size of a SUV, the X-Trail is quite light.. less than 1500kg in weight.. along NS-highway, i only dare to drive >120kmh if there's passengers to weight it down further..otherwise u can really feel the car floating-like when driving at high speed.. sweatdrop.gif

by the way, the accident MY X-Trail, dont have rear spoiler to decrease 'lift' and 'drag' when moving at high speed.. shakehead.gif

SUV's is not suitable for high speed driving due to the increased CG and springy suspensions. Just because a SUV has the power to speed, it does not mean it is for that. The power is for off-roads but then again, I see alot of SUV's that will never see the day of grassland.

When I used to a drive a sub-1000kg car like the Vios on the NSHW at 200kmh (dumb dumb dumb to do that last time), it was a scary experience, causing me to slow down to only around 160kmh (still quite fast... not good).

The shape of the TRD spoiler and bodykit didn't do much to help keep the car on the road. Moving past a bus would cause the car to shift sideways slightly, making it very treacherous to drive at times.

When driving the S15 on the NSHW, I only dare to travel around 140kmh, max at 160kmh for some time. The car is stable with all the handling mods I have in it, but I don't want to risk hitting a dumb pothole or something like that and having my car's tail come out when I don't want it to do so. sweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gif

At least with the ultra-lowered body of the car, plus the twin blade GT wing at the back, the whole car sits on the road, with no sideway feeling when passing a slower bus / truck like last time in the Vios.

think many get the concept of SUV wrong...

an SUV with its 4WD capability (on some models), high torque/power output and high ground clearnace made driving off-road simpler (but not the serious type one hor) but that doesnt entail it has to be driven off road.

its just another form of lifestyle vehicle (similar to those who bought supercars...does that means it has to be on race?).

but i agreed with you that high CG vehicles like SUVs should not speed excessively especially on environment thats not suitable for it.. eg. crosswind, roads laden with potholes etc..
