Hi,

Do the Revo free 5 hr trial, get an idea what you are paying for. Lightspeed mentioned once, if you flash, you can't sell. if you stage 2 your engine, your flash also wasted, as you need to upgrade the chip. You can try an actual chip replacement.

Hi Lamy. Pardon to OT abit. may i ask if u chipped already, then add spark optimizer/coil booster, do u need to get the chip reflash/remap etc?

I am not sure about GIAC. For Revo, you can actually buy an optional device to change the boost and petrol. May be I set my boost level at highest level of 9, so I often receive missed-firing or exhaust warning signal (the organe lamp that looks like an engine). I think I am going back to lower the levels.

I don't think so, those just make engine more efficient. Youe mech should be able to confirm this for you.

Sorry, can't help much.

Hi, there are many posts on chipping/flashing in both mycarforum and vagsg forums. You can search for them and will be far more informative that I can be.

In simple terms, newer cars use ECU (chip) to manage the engine. The term "chipping" actally refers to changing the ECU which remaps engine inputs to increase power or efficiency.

"Flashing" refers to burning-in remapped parameters on original chip.

But many people use the terms interchangabily. Most people flash their chip nowadays.

chipping and flashing is most effective on Turboed and car with high rev capabilities (like Vtec) engines.

I am no expert just sharing what I know.

1.8T engine is very "elastic". The power can stretch to even >300BHP if it is in manual gear. Chipped up "release" the engine performance but oso depends on its existing exhaust, turbo charger version etc.

If you search in the forum, you can find lots of write up on this topic.

Hi shawrac,

Relak is quite right. An ECU remap would have very very little diff to the power on non Turboed skodas. Definitely not worth it.

Level 9 is suppose to go with race fuel with octane level of above 100... that's why the plugs were misfiring. With revo, and Ron98 fuel, max setting should not exceed 7.

Wow! So Fierce!! good thing I didn't "offend" any Skoda Superbs, they must be running 280plus from what you said!

No lah. Potential is there but need a lot of mods, lots of money and lots of days in the workshop to reach 300hp.

But the simple flashing can increase BHP from 150 to 195.

Potential is same for all 1.8T VAG cars. VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda.

But the weight of Spb will humble the power gain, and the auto trany too. Would love to drive a manual spb. Dream of the power on tap.

In summary:

GIAC is by a very good tuner called garette lim based in the US (no relation to garette turbos), the distributor in SG is one single guy only, if i recall correctly he has no workshop. Now i think you can get GIAC maps from servotronic tho.

REVO is distributed by CAG Autosport and you can find them here. The chap is called Huan and there is a 5hr trial.

GIAC and Revo have similar mapping. i personally find GIAC more agressive in the mapping, especially the race maps.

if you are looking for more stock style of mapping and retaining drivability of your VAG car then it would be MTM tuning.

the 1.8T is indeed a very versatile and elastic engine. with the stock internals you can get about 340+bhp easily and run within safe limits. the only downside of the 1.8T is that the stock injectors are a bit 'weak' (i.e not enuff volume). for anything more than stage 2+ tuning you will have to replace the stock injectors to get any decent gains. some tuners have stage 2 runnning on stock injectors but this is really taxing the duty cycle of the injector. anything more than 200hp you prob wanna upgrade to the higher volume bosch (380cc/440cc) injectors found on the 225hp TT/S3 1.8T engine.

for the 2.0T FSI you do not need injector upgrading. the stock FSI injector is capable of a lot of reserve and you can even go 300+bhp easily just by chipping the car and dropping in a bigger turbo.

for the 1.6NA engines im afraid there is no program offered by GIAC or Revo or MTM et cetera. The tuners mainly concentrate on the turbo engine market. In SG most pple use unichip for NA tuning. however your VAG car is (mostly) a bosch motronic ECU and basically its not that easy to piggyback something right let alone find a decent tuner for the Unichip. id say leave it stock. there are reports on the VAG forum where the engine just does not run properly with a piggyback and plenty of other problems. basically the bosch motronic is not kids stuff. you have to know what youre doing to mess with it otherwise you will really run into more problems than creating more power.

There are 2 ways to get the tuning package into your car (different tuners have different methods):

(1) flashing the chip

(a) either by a direct flash by plugging a unit into a OBD diagnostic port of the vehicle.

(b) taking the ECU out and placing it on a flash rig with contacts to the chip and performing the flash

(2) physically removing the old chip and soldering a new chip into the car (usually you solder in a mouting base that is a chip holder a then you insert the chip into the chipholder, microchips dont like heat running into them - direct solder is avoided)

One thing about flashing and reflashing the ECU. there is a counter in the VAG ECU that records the number of times you mess around with it. i generally dont recommend flashing it too many times otherwise you run into trouble. either the ECU malfuntions or the counter tells you you have reached your limit and you cant mess with it anymore.

and finally on the flip side, i always condone safety. if you are making your 0-60mph times shorter. please consider how you are going to handle that extra power stopping. your tuning package has to be balanced choice.
