CVT 'Gear Slip'???

Last night after driving in very heavy rain, my CVT car suddenly jerked when going up the slope of my MSCP. It somehow managed to clear the slope but continued jerking when I stepped on accelerator when on level ground.

Feeling is like kenna stuck in a high gear in slow speed.

I stopped my car, changed to neutral, then changed back to D and the problem went away.

Anyone experienced this before? Could it be something to do with the rain? Now a bit scared when driving at high speed.

BTW my car mileage ~25k km.

Sorry my description maybe not clear.

To elaborate further, feeling is like when driving manual car trying to go up MCSP slope in gear 3 instead of gear 2. Or when you are in gear 3 when your speed is only 10km/h.

Vibrating/jerking I can't tell the diff [:p]

My 4AT when my gear goes up from 2nd to 3rd, there will be a momental pause and slight jerk before going to 3rd gear.

I also wonder what's wrong.

Neutral Newbie

Could it be that you engage Overdrive? That what happens to me when I engage overdrive accidently on my 4AT Latio for the first time. Thought something went wrong when all of a sudden RPM shoot up and I cant get the car to move fast. Discover later that engine ram up to give the extra power.

Check it out on your manual.

In CVT we have this thing called 'CVT Sport' mode (not sure if similar to AT Overdrive). I drive with this switched on all the time mainly to give me better pickup. Like you said RPM will shoot up when I engage this (maybe to counter CVT lag) but so far I haven't had any prob except for what happened last night [confused]

Today drive to work also no problem. Not sure if my PI workshop has any experience with CVT also - scared scarly highlight to them they treat my car like AT [sweatdrop]

I just have a wild thought ... maybe, just maybe ... at that moment last night my wet wheels slipped on the wet slope and this caused some sensor to detect wrongly or something ????????

I think the 'CVT SPORTS MODE' you refering to works like the overdrive in all AT cars. Not advisable to drive your car with this mode ALL THE TIME as it not only give you bad FC but so overkill your gear box. How long have you been drving in this mode?

CVT Sports allows the car to intelligently decide to hold a certain ratio for you to extract more power from the engine at higher RPM (you should note that most normal cars has their max power at some crazy RPM like 6k). Typically, it will shift to a higher gear under normal load.

CVT is also fairly common now so I guess if your PI can sell the car to you, they can service it (it's more finicky than normal automatic gears though).

Finally, my guess is that your tires lost grip and ABS kicked in during that fateful day. If there's anything to panic about, perhaps it would be your tires' poor wet grip. If you were going upslope and your car is FWD, the weight of the car is towards the rear thereby lifting the car and reducing traction. Makes sense?

Oh I didn't know that!

My manual did say to switch on CVT Sports for responsiveness and switch it off to improve FC. It did not mention anything about gearbox damage due to prolonged usage.

I happened to chance upon some Mini-Cooper forum and some folks there also drive with their CVT Sports on all the time.

I have been driving on CVT Sports for 3 months liow! [sweatdrop]

CVT sports mode works like overdrive in other AT cars. Most ppl use it only during overtaking for the extra power, if works like downshifting of gears or virtually lock your gear in lower gear to prevent it from upshift. I also drive CVT.
