Lemonade78 Clutched January 1, 2007 Share January 1, 2007 (edited) Anyone has changed Tokico absorber for their corolla Altis? Is it a Gas absorber or Oil absorber and is it compatible??? As it is made in Japan and the price is cheaper and much stiffer than KYB Excel-G . Would like to check where can i get it? Not sure whether to change the spring as well. Any comment??? Very much appreciated! Edited January 1, 2007 by Lemonade78 ↡ Advertisement
Teddi Neutral Newbie January 1, 2007 Share January 1, 2007 (edited) Most aftermarket shocks are gas filled, unless you select twin tube type for the front. Gas filled shocks are stiffer than oil filled and gas filled are much noiser than oil. Toyota OEM shocks are oil filled. You can also try popular ones like Monroe Sensa-Trac, Sachs & Koni Yellow. Newcar 1st Gear January 1, 2007 Share January 1, 2007 Since Toyota OEM shocks are oil filled. Oil leaking out of it would indicate something is not in well position. What about those gas filled for after market type.?? how would we know when something is wearing out? Pls help to advise further ...
Teddi Neutral Newbie January 1, 2007 Share January 1, 2007 Check your shocks at 40-50K. Usually signs of failure from oil leaks or incase of gas filled, your car will ride like a horse (damping). Also tyre wear marks & ride comfort. If have $$, change them at 50K regardless of wear.
Lemonade78 Clutched January 1, 2007 Author Share January 1, 2007 My nightmare is that i have change the front pair absorber at BM during my 20K servicing. Yesterday, went for my 40K servicing at a well known workshop at AMK and was shock to see my both my front absorber leaking. Really very dissappointed with Toyota parts....damn lousy
Teddi Neutral Newbie January 2, 2007 Share January 2, 2007 You are not the first person to complain. Toyota stock shocks are famous for oil leaks. Pay for better shocks if you have the $$. The stock shocks even when new, gives alot of body roll & bad traction. My friend's Corolla has its front shocks changed 3 times - Claim warranty
Danapj Clutched January 2, 2007 Share January 2, 2007 Mine also changed twice but eventually changed to KYB cause the third set also dying. Didn't even bother to go back BM with warranty claim as time taken is too long. Need to do alignment after that. Waste of money
Lemonade78 Clutched January 2, 2007 Author Share January 2, 2007 (edited) yup. The rollover mades my balls strink or maybe drop out when i go 60km/h at the Marine Parade flyover. When turning the bend really scared me out of my life. Btw, is it ok to just change the front absorber??? Any workshop selling Tokico or is it better to buy it at the accessories shop then bring it to a workshop to install? Genie47 1st Gear January 2, 2007 Share January 2, 2007 Gas filled doesn't mean they are filled with gas alone. There is oil in gas-filled shocks as well. Both will leak oil if damaged.
Teddi Neutral Newbie January 2, 2007 Share January 2, 2007 Oil in gas-filled shocks are also known as Twin Tube shocks.
Teddi Neutral Newbie January 2, 2007 Share January 2, 2007 (edited) It is ok to just change the front absorber. Normally front wears off faster than the rear due to engine load, unless your ride carries heavy load at rear. If your ride has many years to go, can consider buying better shocks or my opinion is to take the koni Sports set 1130 (shocks with lowered springs) http://www.koni.com/konisport/ The spring is progressive, hence the ride comfort is not too harsh, maintaining the everyday ride comfort and it is stiff enough to go thru humps where you will not loose posture. Front is of twin tube & rear is gas filled. Shocks including installation should be about $1000-1200. Edited January 2, 2007 by Teddi
Lemonade78 Clutched January 7, 2007 Author Share January 7, 2007 Decided to book a time with BM once again for the absorber. If BM agree to change the absorber, will be good. If BM give excuse of waiting time of 8-10weeks, will definately make their life miserable with complaint and then F##k then upside down....hahahaaa! Anyway, if they don't change the leaking absorber....LL go for KYB excel G liao
