Armored_Saint Neutral Newbie April 13, 2003 Share April 13, 2003 (edited) Guys, Been thinking for a while...is there any difference if ignition cables are arranged from the distributor the spark plugs? For example, 1-2-3-4 becomes 1-3-2-4...and so on? Edited April 13, 2003 by Armored_Saint ↡ Advertisement
Saaber Neutral Newbie April 13, 2003 Share April 13, 2003 Yes there will be a big difference....because you are messing up the spark plug firing order....
Armored_Saint Neutral Newbie April 13, 2003 Author Share April 13, 2003 (edited) Hmm, just earlier...my neighbour was cleaning his cables and when he reconnected and restarted, he discovered the engine and a very low idle...with almost minimal power...he thought he had connected 2 and 3 wrongly so he switched their positions...the idle speed shot up...to about 1200-1300. So surely this is not correct? He reposition 2 and 3 to what should be their supposedly their original positions...but the low idle remained...how to explain this? It left us scratching our heads. Some poor connection or loose spark plug? Edited April 13, 2003 by Armored_Saint
Saaber Neutral Newbie April 13, 2003 Share April 13, 2003 The cable position where the higher rpm pccur one is correct...maybe it is because the cables all along got poor contact with the spark plug.....so all he need to do now is to turn the idle speed down.... Armored_Saint Neutral Newbie April 13, 2003 Author Share April 13, 2003 Wee don't think it's correct...becos something funny actually with that 'fast idle' combination. On idle the RPM would actually refuse to idle at 1000RPM...it would force itself to 1500RPM...and then go down...and then up to 1500RPM...and then down...and then up...and then down and then up...it was quite funny...anyway, we reversed the combination again and it suddenly seemed to work...idling properly again without that initial loss in power. I've never toyed with the ignition order on my car so this was quite an eye opener for me...and one that still leaves me scratching my head...I can only suspect poor spark contact or damaged cables or something... Saaber Neutral Newbie April 14, 2003 Share April 14, 2003 There is a fixed firing order....usually for 4 cylinder: 1342 or 1432....best is to go look at another similar car to be sure....but when removing cable to clean, do it one at a time so you will not mess up the order....
