Hi guys..... my virgin post....brand new to this forum.....

Anyway, just a thought about the kompressor and E240 engines....

The power between the E200 and E240 is hardly noticable as the figures are very close... and the E240 is slightly heavier than the E200..... where the E240 excels (over the E200) is the power delivery.... smooth, creamy as opposed to harsh and noisy......

But for the money, the E200 is a better bet....lower road tax and newer engine.......

In my humble opinion, the new E class has lifted the level of the game two notches..... not so sure about the new 5..... I think the backside of the 5 is not as nice as the E class...... and those transparent round lights (esp in Xenon) are just beautiful.......

Hi Gurugreg, welcome to MCF and I hope you find this forum informative and enjoyable! [sunny]

Well, the power difference between the E200 (1.8L supercharged 4-pot) and E240 (6-pot NA) is 7 or 9 bhp, which is negligible in real time. Agree with you that the difference will be how the power is delivered. The 6-pot engine may also give a better torque curve, and that's important for such a big car.

However, with >$15000 difference between the two, not to mention huge difference in road tax and minimal difference in power, the choice is obvious.

I would still think the 5-series the better car to drive and it's in-line 6 engine more refined than the E-200.

Cheers!

Hi Gurugreg,

Welcome to MCF ! Do enjoy your stay here and come along for our weekly meetups ! More info in our MEETUPS folder. nod.gif

Admittedly, choosing between 2 very closely specced cars can pose a headache sometimes. sweatdrop.gif But the usual factors to look out for are there:

- new model or outgoing model

- OMV, selling price, COE rebate

- engine capacity and power

- comfort levels and interior trim

-aesthetics interior and exterior

- strength of car body...ie. safety

- drivability...ie. fun factor

- additional options etc

Thanx for your contributions ! thumbsup.gif

thanks for the welcome people......

In the past, the 5 has always been a better 'driver's car'...... not sure about it now.....

I test drove the E class and have to say that it was a really comfortable drive and the instrument panel was very pleasing to the eye..... especially the middle console...... lovely.....

But I think the Audi is still a better 'put together' car....... what do you guys think???

Yes the gap has narrowed between the E-class and the 520i, so the only way to decide is to test drive the car yourself to see which one 'feels' better. nod.gif

As for Audi...I've only test driven the A4 2.0 Multitronic...features wise...not as much as the MB or BMs, handling was good, but I find the console features/functions a let down, the only thing good was the sound system. thumbsup.gif

I feel like I'm selling Audis' here..... but anyway, the older Audis' have a real bad gear box problem.... always down shifting before the correct speed and this causes the rev to jump up.... very uncomfortable......

This problem was fixed after Audi adopted the Tiptronic gearbox from Porsche....... the new CVT gearbox is pretty smooth and the 1.8T engine is very modify-able......

As for the console, well, it does its job..... form and function.......

I use to think that SAABs were fantastic but I hear that there were many problems with the car..... are there???

yeah....

I was looking at several cars before the Audi..... The main competitors, well, 3 series and C Class..... also the S602.0T, Honda Accord and the Mazda 6.......

Finally decided on the Audi..... all cars have pros and cons....but eventually narrowed down to the Volvo and the Audi......

No offence but (in my opinion) the T4 looks great on the outside, but the inside....well, not to my liking.....

But not all is sunny in Audiland...... I don't really like the turbo growl and the front wheel drive..... I sometimes 'skid' the front when doing a U-turn from stationary...... but that's an inherent problem with front wheel drive cars.....otherwise, I think its a great car...... the quattro models are great but its due to the lower range and higher petrol consumption....well, at the end of the day, its your preference.......
