DIY Car Fragance Refill

I try making my own refill, cos I find market ones too ex and cannot customise it. You also get to recycle the glass container as well more environmentally friendly. Furthermore its not too hard as well. This is the mixture which I tried hope you guys enjoy it.

Things you need.

1. Used empty fragance bottle

2. Perfume or cologne which you want to use (I put in CK-one).

3. Un-scented Baby Lotion (I use NUTC brand)

4. Glycrine (you can get it from chinese medical shops)

Method

1. Clean the used bottle. Mostly likely you cannot clean out the old smell, but its ok.

2. Pour in the baby lotion abt 1/5 of the bottle vol. 1/5 Glycrine.

3. Pour in 3/5 of the desired scent.

4. Shake a bit so its emsulified a little. But the baby lotion will separate out later. its ok.

The baby lotion will not dissolve into the perfume/cologne. It will extract some of the scent modules into it, but most imptly it controls the evaporation rate of the water-base perfume/colgone. Without the baby lotion, the evaporation is too fast..it only last a week. The mix will last more than a month.

The glycrine acts as a thickener and helps to bind the baby lotion & perfume. Its actually the stuff that's added to commerical bubbles, which make them last longer.

perfume will turn rancid if the molecules were broken down by bacteria...usually additive is added to the perfume so it will retend the smell.

Whats the chinese equivalent of Glycrine? Wait I go to the shops tell them that, they catch no ball.

Now you make sense as to why some perfume I put in the car gets evaporated so so quickly.

Glycerine can get from pharmacy also. It is an emolient. I think ICNPharm makes them. Same section where you will find the cord spirit, denatured alcohol and rubbing alcohol.

if cannot get glycerine...just add the baby oil into the bottle together with the perfume. The oil will dissolve or extract some of perfume essences. remember your Secondary school organic chemistry...Like dissolves Like....all chemicals with smells are organic. The whole idea is to use oil to control the rate of evaporation.

I remembered that part of the glycerine molecule has -OH which will bind water molecules making the water based perfume slightly oily to prevent fast evaporation. Glycerine is ex stuff. A small bottle cost me abt $2.50 at the medical shop.

try it and give some feedback...I hope I don't get sue for break the rice of the car perfume companies

Neutral Newbie

my formula is this. confirm no rancid smell.

1) 1/2 tap water (distilled water if you have money to buy, if not tap water is fine)<--- this is done to slow down the rate of evaporation.

2) 1/4 essence (can get those from bodyshop or daiso for $2)

3) 1/4 ethanol (best to use vodka. if not denatured ethanol will also do)

if the perfume precipitates, it's probably because of the essence or your alcohol. check to see if they contain insoluble organic substance, replace them with other types.

requires some trial and error though.
