They actually like it! plus its 75 kg lighter for each model over the earlier E39 series...

In their words, "this time, design boss Chris Bangle and his team have crafted a more restrained sports saloon. All the key BMW design cues - kidney grille, double headlamps, 'Hofmeister' kink in the C-pillar - remain but have been re-interpreted. The overall look, though reminiscent of the 7-series, is cleaner, sleeker and sportier.

As revealed, the new face of future BMWs has a sloping kidney grille and pointed, wrap-around headlamps giving a streamlined appearance. New engine mounting points allow for a lower bonnet, topped by the signature V-shaped contour running back to the A-pillars." [:/][:/]

What changes the most from pics to metal is the sense of prespective, and hence, perceived proportions. For example, I just didn't appreciate how low and wide the Murcielago was until I saw it up close, when its other-worldly shape completely blew me away [jawdrop] So there is still hope for the new Five, but I'm not holding my breath...

Yup! sometimes a 2D shot cannot portray what the real car looks to the naked eye. Moreover, the May issue promises an all-out test of the new 5 and I'm waiting to see how it fares. Looks wise, it may not be perfect but driving dynamics could play a big part in swaying the crowd unless there're only towkays buying it (change of target mkt) who couldn't care less how it drives. All they want is the ostentatious badge! [:/]

I think the driving part has to improve if the 5-series were to continue. Its just how much more they can make a good package even better! As for the towkay part, I hope it doesn't deteriorate to that level...

Read somewhere that BMW sharpened the steering on the new 5-series. Something about directly varying the steering ratio (don't ask me how!). Then, again, I can't remember whether its a standard feature or an option, or only available on the higher performance models.

So far, the design looks like it could grow-on-you. Although it hasn't reached inlove.gif levels, at least (after the initial 'shock') I keep peeking second looks at pictures of it.

Also, hoping that it lives up to and even exceeds the phenomenon that the current 5 is.

I reckon it's an option. It's called Active Front Steering system, and if I remember correctly it uses an indirect gearing system that's controlled by the computer.

"Claimed to offer new levels of driving enjoyment, comfort and safety, the system electronically alters the the degree to which the front wheels turn.

It does this based on a number of factors, one of which is speed. The slower you travel, the less input (or steering wheel turns) is required for a given situation, such as tighter turns, navigating city traffic or parking. At higher speeds, the steering becomes less direct, offering better stability during highway driving, for instance.

When the vehicle's numerous sensors conclude you're picking up the pace, perhaps indulging in your favourite twisty backroads, or even initiating a sudden movement, the steering response quickens, allowing for more decisive output.

It works in tandem with the vehicle's Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC), which can sense increases in the yaw rate - such as the enthusiastic driving or emergency swerving - and adapt its steering ration accordingly."

Sounds like we're closer to drive-by-wire than I realise. Thanks for the additional info. Cheers! thumbsup.gif
