Blitz Induction Cover + CAI

Neutral Newbie

Hi,

I have installed Blitz Induction Cover ( similar to open-pod) and getting around 68-70 degree celcius on the intake temperature. I am thinking of doing some form of CAI to cool it further. Preferably, I would like to retain the Blitz IC - I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

To be honest, even in Singapore, your car's engine bay isn't hot enough to warrant the use of a CAI.

I don't know why so many people insist on doing it. Not even a stock FI car is needed (FI produces more heat).

If you ever run a test and hook up the engine diagnostic computer to the ECU and you measure the intake temperatures and run:

1 x Test with CAI

1 x Test without CAI

Both test conducted in similar ambient temperatures and humidity, and you dyno both cars, the results are close to similar.

Even if you report a 1 - 3 hp gain, your torque/power band will remain the same and I can assure you if you bring the car to the Quarter Mile drags strip, you car won't run any quicker than stock.

Some say: "well but still there is a 1-3hp gain. What do you call that ??"

Let me assure you that dyno figures are "very very easy" to manipulate. If you want, I can add another 10hp to your dynosheet but your car will still be running same Elapse Time at the Quarter Mile as what it is before.

The only time you try to get a consistent reading is that the dyno operator has the licence to do a "Shoot out mode" which cost something like $1500 PA just to be able to perform shoot out mode power runs on their dyno. On shoot out modes, they run a very strict regulation where by figures may not be easily played around with.

So effectively speaking, you've just wasted a few hundred bucks on a mod that didn't do jack all.

As I speak, there will be a few stubborn ones who will insist their Butt/As* dyno is more accurate than a $200,000 dynamometer.

That I have nothing to say.

At the end of the day the results and facts will be shown via your ECU diagnostic computer.

you mean the air temp in the engine bay is same as the air temp outside? U mean CAI for FI also wont help? Y does subaru utilize Bonnet scoops as a form of CAI? Wouldnt it be better for them to save the cost and just do a in the engine bay intake? I thought cooler air = better combustion? Is there a more technical answer to this query? Im also interested to know [gossip]

The OAT and Engine Bay temp will be different.

CAI will not assist FI vehicles unless they have upsize their turbos. Other than that the stock air flow beginning from the air vents of your vehicle will do just fine.

What you are talking about is manufacturer design. We do not discredit car manufacturers for their design unless there are serious flaws. Not that I know of to date.

Subaru did create a bonnet scoop not just to provide cooler air to the engine bay, but also if you open the bonnet of a WRX/STi you will see that the TMIC is just below the air scoop when you close the bonnet. Intercoolers require cool air to charge against it to cool down the temperatures of the core.

And no, it will not be better for Subaru to do an CAI intake because it is a FI vehicle. This means it will require an intercooler to cool down the car. That is the reason why you need cooler air charging against the core of the IC.

However if you were to do a CAI set up in a WRX/STi running on fairly mild mods, a CAI won't do jack all.

Cooler air only makes your engine run more efficiently. Efficiency is more productive when high a performance TCed cars that had upsize their turbo.

Bigger turbo creates more heat and hence requires better cooling. The use of CAI will than assist by engine because the IC can only do so much. Meaning to say you will have Heat Soak loitering around the engine bay where it is easy for the intakes to draw hot air. A CAI in this case is than beneficial.

Hope this helps.

open pod with good heat shield and CAI does help a bit...marginally...CAI does not boost ur performance per say...it just make ur engine run more efficiently... i did a closed pod with CAI piping near bumper area...i did experience slight improvement throughout my entire range (mid-high), no dyno... and my FC improved quite significantly...this i have proven for 4 full tanks... and my car dun feel as sluggish as b4 (stock) on hot afternoons....

did u experience lost in low end with ur open pod???

Yes... I was warned before but then again, this is CVT.. pick up is slow anyway on the low end. So I may have to switch back to a closed pod.

Right now, my FC really sucks right now. Would having an open pod be worst off in terms of FC ? Everyone says that it's the heavy right foot but would having the open pod exacerbate the situation...

1 a good heat shield plus CAI piping to draw air from outside engine bay might help...if u dun mind the rather messy setup and cost...

2 change to closed pod with CAI setup...damages ard 400-500... [knife]

3 switch back to stock

Just been 3 weeks. It's Sienta ( don't laugh [:p] ).. I am getting 7 KM /l.. maybe I will switch back to stock and see how it goes... may I ask what closed pod system+ CAI are you using ?

FC is very high during run-in... ya i suggest u switch back to stock and monitor ur FC and 'feel' ur car performance....i using cyberspeed closed pod

Hmmm... just found out that my induction cover is actually a SRI:

Blitz Induction Cover

Type: Short Ram

The Blitz Induction cover essentially converts the stock air box into a Short Ram intake. It does this by replacing the entire lower assembly of the stock air box with just a flat panel filter.

ard 500... where's ur SRI located??? building a heat shield around the pod and connect a CAI piping drawing air from outside engine bay...auto dynamac do this...

Aiya ppl enjoy doing DIY on CAI mah. They see ppl do they also wanna try. U tell them no effect they very sad cos spend so much $$$ and effort.

I try telling my friends only sound effect but they insist they feel something. [:|]

Then I try asking them the aluminium pipe ducting or the stainless steel air filter aren't these conductors of heat. Furthermore the engine bay is so hot these metals become heaters for the incoming air.

They can shake their heads and tell me it wun happen. [hur]

I fu le u!
