Car Speaker = Home Speaker?

Was just wondering if anyone here ever put home speaker into the car and use it as car speaker or vice vesa?

I notice that the ohm and max watt output is the same on a 5" speaker of a home theatre system and thought of trying it out in the car.

Also, thought of plugging the woofer from the car into the home hi-fi.

Will there be any side effects or explosion?

here's my understanding lah.

home spkrs are generally 8 ohm, car spkrs are 4 ohm.

if u put an 8 ohm spkr in a car (off an amp which pushes nominal power @4ohms), the amp will only push out 1/2 of the power due to the higher impedence.

but if u put a 4 ohm spkr on a home system which accomdates 8 ohm only, this aint too healthy for ur home amp. but i tink most home amps can take 4ohm loads (the cheap technics one i had could do it).

i'm sure there's a more cheem explanation, but this is my 2 cents lah

cheers

i think the difference is the material used for the speaker/boxes. car as you know is more harsh than home use.

otherwise, the built and design of car and home speaker should be very similar - with just one difference - car speakers are designed for close proximity listening and home audio speaker is for wide-hall listening with beaming for a sweet-spot. but then this can be compensated using DSP processing.

I think the passive crossover in home application may be built differently from that of the car. I am not sure. Slonez may be able to provide some advice.

i have seen HK mags where they test car spkrs using home audio equipment. tweets & drivers installed in cabinets with the x-over sitting on top [:p]

There shouldnt be any explosion

but the main factor here could be the mounting/enclosure differences.

The 5" home theatre speaker driver could be optimized for a box of certain volume, and either sealed or ported for eg. You will not be able to get the same situation when the 5" is mounted in your car door.

It may work out okay but chances are that the home theatre speaker wouldnt sound optimal in a door. To make an educated guess, you might need to know the thiel/small parameters of the speaker driver in concern, the volume of air in your door and whether or not you have a layer of sound insulation to act as a baffle in the car door.

just occurred to me, will any car designer actually design the car door panel to work like a speaker box? thus providing top-end audio from stock?
