What you described is the norm for commercial car washes. They have so many cars to wash, will be so exhausted.

I even saw at Caltex Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, the man used the same sponge to clean the rims first, then the car body. [shakehead]

Commercial car washes shd be avoided if possible as :

1. Your rims & brake discs are hot & do not have time to cool down before they hose it down. Causes brake disc to warp & damages rims.

2. Applying shampoo on a hot bonnet spoils the paintwork (chemical reaction).

Good advice. It is important to note these things. Car care can help maintain car performance as well as loads of $$$. Better safe than sorry.

Hey guys... this is not a thread to offend people who go to petrol stations to wash their cars...

As usual... had sat dinner with my family... both sisters came home to eat..

then my second bro in law... he is a doctor so no time to go wash car.. his maid also no time.. take care of children..

then

he was like..

shall i try out petrol station car wash?

I was like go ahead..

But his car also coated with amazing glaZE.. so. i was abit worried..

but he said. dun want u to wash cause very hazy... i just drive out to wash it.

So we drove it to shell car wash. serangoon gardens.

Went in, they sprayed the car with high pressure jet( cool! ) then they started to spray the foam.. that was nice.. but the sponge they use like never rinse or wash away previous cars dirt leh.. they just PIAK and start scrubbing away

then when everything finish. they spray the car again .

Now come the drying part.

I was at the back seat and saw the guys taking cloths ( those normal cloths) and started drying on the car.. very effecient 3 men to the car.

BUT. the cloth was black.. and when they finished drying the car, they used the same cloth to dry thye rims and tyres.. I WAS LIKE... OMFG!

then i stared at my bro in law.. he was like.. yeah yeah. thats how they do it..

But overall... the job was not so good not so bad... okay okay only...

For me, as a person who washes my parents car myself, i still considered the car dirty.

So when we drove home, i inspected the car... some bird sxxt still stuck on the paint work.. then the rims... were oily.. i dont know why. And there was stil dirt.

But no time to wash the whole car again. so i just re-washed the rims.. and they turned out shing shing sparkling clean again...

So i am not against petrol station car wash. Just find that they dont do a very through job. But for $6, i think a job about 70% done.. okay lah.. nth much to say..

Yupp

Just my six cents worth..

One day I washed my car at my workplace. A colleague exclaimed at the procedure: one wheel at a time, too (dismantled each wheel for washing too)

My experience with the carwash at the nearby Mobil station (end of lor chuan just before the shell station at SerangoonGdn) 6 months ago.... dirty cloth, mainland China workers, when I reached home, I saw side windows glass and bonnet badly scratched, looked like the chinamen used the metal nozzle of the water spray to scratch these places......... till today the permanent scratches on the side windows are still staring at me everytime I open the doors..........

i rather leave my car unwashed, but never kao-kwan the car wash even if its free........ [mad][mad]

Read bold quote!!

NOT TRUE!! When you drive in wet weather, your brake discs also get wet.

I don't know why so many people like to repeat this myth over and over again.

Read my earlier post. it isn't true.

Your brake discs can get wet ANYTIME when there's a water splash on the road or when other car's tyre spray hits your car.

Automotive parts like brake discs/housing/calipers have much better tolerances than that.

If discs can warp just like that, then how? If it starts raining, should we all just stop our vehicles and let the discs cool then carry on driving??

Mai gong leh!!!

maybe when the wheels are spinning while moving in traffic when it rains, the rain drops hitting the brake disc are spun off and therefore do less harm to the disc compared with situation in the car wash?.... car wash water poured onto the disc stays there longer and create temperature shocks......... maybe only

Then what happens if you're stopped at traffic light, car next to you drive pass splash on your disc/rims?

Then in traffic jam how?? ppl drive pass splash onto your wheels?

There will be damages to the disc if it's already very hot and suddenly cold water is splashed onto it. Normal braking will make the disc hot, but not hot enough to be damaged by cold water. If you are unlucky and kena cold water after hard / emergency braking........ good luck to you, otherwise worry for nothing..... please feel free to try it out if you are really interested .... take care

"RED HOT" like F1 or WRC style braking, probably yes, and that is if you spray on to it when its RED HOT, but this overly exaggerated concern of "disc warp" because of cold water has been overly repeated by so many drivers that its becoming nonsensical.

Disc braking technology has evolved so much over the years. Such tolerances and expanding/contracting have been incorporated into the design as well as the construction material in disc rotors. If a car disc brake is so delicate, we'd be seeing tons of cases of warped discs everyday!

Under normal driving conditions, your discs should NOT warp when it comes into contact with water (be it blasted in a car wash or puddles or spray from other vehicles).

You don't see drivers suddenly reporting vibration under braking immediately after a storm or going through a car wash do you? This is a classic case of a rumour (or something isn't true) that is repeated so many times that it has been accepted as the norm.

ThkQ for sharing the info [:)]

When the disc is red-hot, it's even advisable not to step on the brake while the car is stationary... the hot pads in contact with the hot disc will cause damages to the disc in the form of 'hot-spots' or warps..... but normal driving/braking will not reach red-hot stage, so not to worry.

Nope. Just today I was filling up at an esso station and I saw cars washing as per normal. In fact I saw car washing activities at esso station since a few weeks ago, around the time when haircuts was allowed again, maybe earlier. At the beginning of CB I observed they were closed. Not sure if the washing is base on appointment or special cases only as i recalled it was mostly huge MPVs (alphard type) being washed.

I also had not gone to those $10 car wash in petrol station for years. Went to the one in McPherson Esso (the big one) last month due to the CB. The worst $9 spent. Wash like no wash and I had to drop my ride from the windows down, head lamp down and tail lamp down.
