I've heard good reviews on Marangoni tyres in UK but not the vento models, rather the zeta line instead.

 

It seems that korean tyres has problems on aquaplanning be it Kumho or Hankook so those travelling NS highway should take note.

 

Does anybody know wheather the Goodyear Hydragrip is actually the GY LS2000 II which has just been launched in Sg this year?

I think the term "aquaplanning" is overstated. I used Hankook K105 and travelled on wet at NSH, I don't think it has such problem. Anyway, no super duper tyres can be effective when go thru water level of >5mm. If you looked at their review, it mentioned Kumho KU31 is excellent (scored Top) when in wet braking. How could a tyre scorced top in braking and fare lousy under aquaplanning on wet? Crazy review.

Any test have at least one fixed constant. In the Autoexpress test, all the tires are 185/60R14.

Funny thing is that the K406 scored well on curved aquaplaning. Must be the tread design.

This year, they are putting on 215/55R16 tires. When the 2006 test came out, they tested it in Continental's testing grounds in Texas. Now they are in Bridgestone's testing ground in Italy.

 

Kelpie, this is to say they do not put biase into every year's test by selecting different locations. This year's tire size is also different. However, they are still into "comfort" sizes. Another reason why they pit the comfort tire against the so called UHP tires is this: Who knows! The Comfort tire might trash the UHP tire in all the performance tests.

 

 

Guess who is number one.

 

Goodyear Hydragrip. Toyo is number 6! Vredestein is dethroned this year.

1. My comment was for year 2006. It is a complete rubbish if you ask me.

 

2. The Year 2007 is a better one, it is more levelled playing in term of Tire type.

1. I don't think Kumho KU31 is an underdog and this one you're referring to the 07 review, which is a better one than 2006.

 

2. Perhaps you can enlighten me why it scores so well in wet braking but fares poorly under aquaplaning?

Maxxis confirm have. Dunno who selling but AMK Autopoint level 1 got some shop selling. Yes, the MA-Z1 Victra is advertized heavily.

Ya i heard about the Maxxis models. They are not "cheap" man. Hankook also not cheap. What's cheap in the market in the test may not apply here.

Braking is all about contact. Aquaplaning is all about water eviction. Braking is more of a compound issue whereas aquaplaning is more about thread design. But then again, thread design does contribute to braking because more eviction channels might mean less contact.

 

I would say the KU31 got it right in the compound department and also the thread department for braking but not for water eviction.

 

BTW, I suspect the weightage on aquaplaning is very high. Autoexpress' tests are aped by this German magazine called Autobild. Germans travel very fast on their autobahns. To aquaplane at those speeds.....

 

I would say for most of us here and looking for value. Get the middle of the field performer in aquaplaning. We don't hit more than 110 locally or more than 150 up north.

IIRC, wet braking has to do with tyre compound and thread pattern, while aquaplaning has to do with thread pattern. But the thread design on one has different effect on braking and aquaplaning so some sort of optimization or prioritization is needed.
