Michelin Develops Airless Tires

ShowLetter-thumb.jpgWorrying about running over a nail, or making sure your tires are always full may be a thing of the past thanks to the R&D team at Michelin. This is a prototype for airless tires. Instead of the regular inflated tire, this tire has the traditional outer treads wrapped around flexible, yet sturdy spokes. Apparently these tires are going by the name tweel, which is completely stupid. Jump to see a video of the tweel in action. Image via Fourtitude

Yup seen it a couple of years back. Still a long way to becoming the standard tyres for our cars.

I wonder how strong those rims need to be & how much wil they cost??? [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][sweatdrop]

eagle F1 also no sidewall.

i also wondering abt the integrity of such tyres becos the alignment of flaps seems to cater for rolling resistance only. the cross torque, torsion dunno can handle anot.

well there must be a good reason why the early makers of cars used (air-filled) tyres instead of just vulcanizing the rubber on wheels and that we are still using them now.
