can really feel the difference ba, i find that low end oso improve as i got the close pod wif direct CAI, air suck in is totallyu outside the engine bay, which i think gif mi betta performance, mid range and high range is oso betta as i can overtake ppl betta than my stock air box.

IMHO, i prefer close pod, cos there is a direct sucking of air outside engine bay, for open pod, ur engine would suck in hot air from engine bay, which lose out in low end, no matter its manual or auto.

closed pod or open pod?

i'm using the closed one, looks like a tube lidat with CAI...its good...

i'm using that too. I think such setup is called simota carbon charger.

its good.

any air filter for NA car, the gain is very little 1 to 3 hp the most.

My ride is a New Ford Focus, 2.0L (I live in Shanghai now)

And I replaced my stock filter with a Simota (open pod)after running in my ride at 5000km. I should say that I get significant gain in mid to high range rpm while it suffer a bit at the low end. When I gas it above 3500rpm u can really hear the air being sucked in loud. Shop that sold me claim about 10HP gain. But I cant say for sure.

I've attached a pic here to show that even with this open setup, it does come with a heat shield. Material is not real carbon, just the skin layer, inside is still fiber glass I think.

I've been running this setup for three months now but after recent oil change (10,000km) I must say that the oil comes out really black. I'm having doubt now bout this filter.

In my own opinion, I think Taiwan filter's quality is not as good as a K&N or the BMC CDA type filter.

I'm now looking for a ITG tri-foam type filter. Can any kind forumers here tell me where can I find one in Sillypore?

hihi.

a question on closed pod filter ah..

i'm drivin a 2004 lancer manual and i'm considering changing to the simota close pod filter as i need the space in my engine bay. the stock airbox is limiting my battery size(i'm playing other stuff, not performance) and i've spoke to a shop that told me they can route the filter in such a way that i will have more space for my battery.

how will this close pod filter affect FC? i'm not too concern abt any performance boost, i'm a safety driver, but will my FC suffer?

thanks in advance guys.

cheers

Been driving a closed pod with CAI for roughly 5000km now. No FC changes with about 30% highway/70% normal compared with stock. The gain in pickup comes in after 3000rpm. I should say it's quite a good investment.

Just curious, what are you playing with that you will need a bigger battery? I used to need a bigger alternator when I was playing with ICE on a small cc car, but have never needed to change to a higher capacity battery before.

a battery does play apart too..

i'm plannin a super high powered system, too large an alternator cost too much and will be hard to find a custom bracket.

also changin out the alternator will classify me in the 'open' cat for competition(in future), so now for electrical upgrade, its only the battery.. already got lobang for a 200mAh one, but the dam air box is in the way.

aniway, dam, the pick up only comes after 3000rpm ah.. how abt the lower end? same or worse?

thanks!

i'm using closed pod, which is wad i prefer, it works the same way as the open pod, jus wif the cover around it, which prevents it from taking in hot air, at the same time, cover a bit of the open pod loud noise, whihc makes the engine sound more bassy...

as for auto car, it is nt so recommended to use oped pod, which is i switch from open pod to closed pod, reason being open pod u will loss ur low end in hot weather. closed pod with CAI would solve the problem.

Since it's a closed pod with CAI, the low end is pretty much the same, but if you are really sensitive, you may feel just a little sluggish when moving off from a standstill. I've not notice it after I installed it for a few days. Furthermore, I believe the ECU will take care of the new change and adjust accordingly.

Anyway, thanks for the informative insight about the battery, this is why a forum is a great way to share your experiences. [thumbsup]

Not really, not in the case of the simota closed pod design. Physically speaking, the simota closed pod is entirely encased in its own carbon fibre casing, not wrapped simply in heat shield. The filter in it is positioned in an opposite cone shape. If an open pod is a "<" shape, the simota filter will be a ">" shape.

Furthermore, the simota closed pod design has only 2 holes, probably about 9cm in diameter, one for inflow and the other for outflow. That's different from how an open pod takes in air from all around the cone.

As for the CAI, it will be a CAI tubing connected to the inflow hole and stretched all the way to the side/bodykit/underside of the car. This is to allow the coolest air from the exterior of the car to enter.

With this design, the intake sound is actually softer than an open pod, but for my car, my CAI actually ratters at 5000rpm revs so it's real noisy [:/]

Just installed this simota open pod on my Mz3 today. Stock engine except for semi-flow exhaust. Still observing performance, but first impressions tell me that FC is definitely going downhill. Low end loss is definite but not that signifcant from stock air intake. Will post more observations later.
