A question about auto gears

Guys, just wondering, is there a pump in the auto transmission that pumps the ATF oil to the gears when you start your engine? Where does this oil go when the car is off?

Like in the engine, there is one so that your engine is well lubricated from the start. And when the car is off, the oil goes to a sump.

What about ATF oil?

Auto Transmission basically contains 2 integral parts. The torque convertor and the automatic gear mechansim. ATF's primary function is for the torque convertor to couple the engine rotational power to the ATF gear mechanism (much like a clutch in manual cars). However, part of the ATF fluid flows into the ATF gear mechanism to provide gearing lubrication. I think aout 70% of the ATF is in the torque convertor. ATF is difference from engine oil which serves to lubruicate the engine parts. However the torque convertor may be view as the sump for ATF since most of the ATF is there.

Click here http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm- all the info are there plus perfect photos and drawings.

To understand the baic gearing system in an auto trans click here http://www.mekanizmalar.com/transmission.html

By locking either the planetary ring gear, sun gear or planetary gears you can achieve different gear speed. This basically how the auto trans works.
