I have written to lta regarding the extension of bus lane to 8pm and whether we are allowed to park along single yellow line within bus lane after 7pm. This is their reply

Dear Mr Wang

Parking along Single Yellow Line during Bus Lanes perations Hours

FEEDBACK NUMBER: 522558

We refer to your query dated 15/10/2007.

As you are aware, single yellow line permits the parking of vehicles

from 7.00pm to 7.00am and this coincides with the changes in bus lane hours.

We have gathered views from the Traffic Police and they are of view that

traffic rules governing the bus lane operating hours take precedence

over the parking of vehicles in such circumstances. As such, enforcement actions

could be taken against motorists who park along bus lane before 8.00pm.

We hope the above addresses your query and thank you for writing in.

Hi All,

I've had the problem of bus lanes sometimes, but recently I almost got into trouble with a pick-up driver over it.

It was a weekday and I just had lunch at Chinatown, going back to my office. I was coming out from a side road onto a main road. The first lane was a bus lane and was empty. The other lanes were occupied with cars. The bus lane's dotted line was ridiculously short. So unless I've understood the rules incorrectly, what I had to do was to wait till it was safe enough, then cut out across the bus lane, and into the second lane.

There was this pick-up driven by an impatient rather rough-looking guy behind me, also waiting to exit from the side road. Since the bus lane (first lane) was empty, he must have thought that I was a bloody fool for not cutting out. Honestly, I thought so too. [laugh] Maybe from his angle, he couldn't see that the first lane was a bus lane, I'm not sure.

After a while, Mr. Pick-up driver started getting impatient, making rude gestures with his hands, moving his pick-up closer to my car and started revving his engine real loud. I just ignored him.

Finally, I managed to cut into the second lane. Mr. Pick-up decided to cut onto the bus lane (so he was now on my left). When he was beside me, he stared at me and continued with his insults. Thats when I lost it and gestured back to him to come down.

I overtook Mr. Pick-up and stopped my car (not illegally) further up front and got out and waited for him. But Mr. Pick-up just drove past, pretending not to see me. As he passed, I saw him looking left and right, macham like doing sightseeing like that. I guess he was used to being the aggressor and didn't expect any strong reactions from his "victims". OK, that was wrong of me to blow my top, but I'm only human and there's only so much abuse I can take before reacting. But fortunately that day, a potentially unpleasant situation was diffused quickly.

Have I understood this whole bus lane concept wrongly? What would you have done if you were the first car waiting to exit into the main road?

These pickup drivers are pretty seasoned drivers ..for them to be pissed off i reckon that the dotted line are longer than what you drew ... the likelyhood of you not exiting promptly is high ...

not sure if you get what i mean, hope the picture below will be clearer.

in this case,i think vehicles can stop at the continuous line(in green) in the bus lane waiting(in blue) to filter into lane 2.

I encounter this before I did exactly this, wait just outside the dotted line for a chance to filter out....

then a bus comes along and blast his horns at me... bus lane timing somemore...

its like, endure his horn blasting or pay $120 fine for entering bus lane (can see someone with a camera at the bus stop in front) or make a dash to the lane on the right of the bus lane and pray I won't cause any accident. [:(]

there are two spots in Hougang that are like this, drive pass them almost everyday.

1) at the juction of Yio Chu Kang road, and Hougang Ave 2, as you filter to Hougang Ave 2 from the filter lane, turn out only, you will hit the bus lane, the dotted line is just 1 car length from the give way line. The same is when you turn from Lor Ah Soo into Hougang Ave 3, also only 1 car space. For these two, once you turn out only, immediately you have to filter out, or you will find yourself in the bus lane passed the dotted line.

Bus lanes are created to increase bonus and create jobs for those garmen sector ppl. The lanes r also an answer to SG (world class) bus system tat have drivers driving at 30km/hr when they r too early, and later blame other road users for causing them to be late, or packing the bus like sardine yet blaming high fuel price so justifying and raising bus fares.

Nowadays the drivers also consists of gung ho drivers that dare other rd users..... like in the case describe like u [sweatdrop]

encounter a real gung ho bus driver this morning, the road was busy, this guy, cut out of the bus bay, no signal, straight across two lanes, cause all vehicles on both lanes to slam breaks or bang into him. I was one of them who was forced to slam my brakes and I was in the outer lane. [:(]

your car need to wait and not turn out to wait unless there's chance of you filtering to the next lane.

but then, who cares.. just drive out and hog the bus lane.. let them horn and highbeam.. we are Singaporean [laugh]

it's ok to move out to wait provided that there's no oncoming bus and that the "wait" is just for postioning and for the right gap to move into the lane..
